Rihanna and Katy Perry named among Internet's most influential people
Rihanna, Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian have been named among the 25 most influential people on the Internet by editors at Time magazine.
Chance the Rapper, Chrissy Teigen, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, Korean boyband BTS, Chinese actress Yao Chen and President Donald Trump are also included in the 2017 Time list.
Explaining Rihanna's place in the list, Time editors wrote, "The 29-year-old singer approaches social media with the same aplomb and fearlessness that has become her trademark across music, fashion and culture."
Rihanna hit the headlines earlier this year (17) when it emerged that she is set to star alongside Lupita Nyong'o in a movie based on a tweet in which a user joked that a photograph of the two stars at a 2014 fashion show made them look like a criminal duo who scam rich men.
Earlier this month (Jun17), Katy became the first person to pass 100 million followers on Twitter and opened up to fans in a 96-hour live stream that followed her through her daily routine.
Kim has toned down her Internet presence after she was robbed at gunpoint in a Paris apartment last October (16), but is still one of the world's most popular celebrities, with more than 100 million Instagram followers.
Time editors praised Chrissy for being "relatable" to fans online when opening up about her life with musician husband John Legend, while Chance earned accolades for his political and social activism.
Also on the list is Bana Alabed, a young girl whose Twitter updates about her besieged home city of Aleppo, Syria have caused J.K. Rowling to contact her and send her Harry Potter books.
