Reese Witherspoon and Anne Hathaway offer Kesha their support
Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway and Mariska Hargitay have added their names to the support list for singer Kesha after she lost her contract battle with Sony bosses last week (19Feb16).
A judge in Manhattan, New York ruled the Tik Tok star could not dump the contract she signed with record producer Dr. Luke and Sony a decade ago, despite the fact she's suing the hitmaker, claiming he sexually and emotionally abused her.
Lily Allen and Demi Lovato were quick to comment on the verdict,
offering Kesha their support, and Taylor Swift has since offered to
help the troubled singer cover her legal costs.
And now actresses Witherspoon, Hathaway and Hargitay have added
their thoughts following Lena Dunham's remarks on the court drama
in a lengthy post on her Lenny Letter blog.
Hathaway and Reese both reposted Dunham's online article and the
Wild star wrote, "Thank you Lena Dunham for helping me understand
Kesha‘s case and standing up for all survivors of abuse
#FreedomForKesha."
The Devil Wears Prada star added, "I stand with Kesha. If you are
unfamiliar with the case, Lena Dunham does a brilliant job in this
week’s Lenny explaining the nightmare in which Kesha finds
herself.
"Kesha's situation is just one of all-too-many examples of how the
legal system in this country fails to protect victims of domestic
abuse and sexual violence, the vast majority of whom are women.
Please share and add your voice and your support!
#FreeKesha."
Meanwhile, Hargitay wrote, "For many survivors, speaking out is the
hardest part. It’s also only the first step. Sending u strength
@KeshaRose as u move through this."
Kesha claims her contract with Sony prevents her from working with
anyone but Dr. Luke, her alleged abuser. He maintains he never
abused the singer and insists her record deal allows her to record
with other people.
Dr. Luke has also offered up Kesha's deposition from a 2011
hearing, during which she insisted he never made "sexual advances"
towards her or offered her drugs, but the singer's lawyer Mark
Geragos told TMZ.com on Tuesday (23Feb16) the producer forced her
to lie under oath.
Geragos claims Luke threatened to destroy Kesha's life "if she
didn't cover up his sexual assault."
He also says Luke threatened her physical safety.
"He's pathetic vermin. This guy is nothing more than his
generation's Bill Cosby."
Kesha also took to Twitter.com on Tuesday to share a statement of
support to her fans, writing, "I am beyond words in gratitude.
thank you is not enough but it is all I have. a million times over
and forever thank you. the support I have received has left my face
swollen from tears. I love you all so much. a statement too large
for this format is coming...."
Comedian Cosby has been accused of drugging and/or raping a number
of women in decades-old incidents. He has not been charged with a
crime relating to any of the allegations.
