Former child star Raven-Symone gave lighting technicians on her teen sitcom That's So Raven nightmares after undergoing frequent tanning sessions in a bid to darken her skin for beauty purposes.
The African-American actress reveals she used to feel so self-conscious about her light skin tone, she would take measures to appear darker - because she thought that made her look "pretty".
However, the tanning sessions would cause havoc for the production crew.
Appearing in new TV documentary Light Girls, about color discrimination within the black community, she explained, "When I had my own show, I used to tan three or four times a week in a tanning bed to get darker.
"(But) it's funny, one of the lighting guys came up - I love him to death... (and) he goes, 'Raven, I need you to stop tanning. You're getting too dark, and we have to re-light the whole entire show'.
"(I replied), 'Sorry, I was just trying to be pretty'."
Fellow actresses LisaRaye McCoy, Kim Whitley and KeKe Wyatt have also shared their thoughts and experiences on the topic for the documentary, which will air on America's Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on Sunday (18Jan15).
