Prince to debut song on New Girl

Pop superstar Prince is set to debut a brand new song during TV sitcom New Girl's post Super Bowl episode, in which he features as himself.

The Purple Rain hitmaker is joining Zooey Deschanel and her castmates for the special spot on Sunday (02Feb14) - he will help Deschanel's character Jess and her boyfriend Nick, played by actor Jake Johnson, solve their love problems, and it has been revealed he will also take to the stage for a special performance at the end of the episode.

Johnson tells MTV.com, "He does a new song. He performs an original song that I believe hasn't been released yet. So we (the cast and crew) all got to watch a little concert. The episode ends with a performance. The song's awesome and watching him perform was kind of next level. It sounds like a Prince song. It sounded good. He had everybody in that room dancing. Everybody was kind of going nuts."

Johnson insists that the music icon, who personally reached out to the show's producers to inquire about making a cameo, isn't just phoning his performance in.

He adds, "He's a big fan of the show and he's really interested in the Nick/Jess relationship and he wanted to be a part of that story... He's also just a genuinely talented human being. He's obviously Prince the musician, but he's a really good actor. And I think people will see in the episode that he's legitimately good and he's legitimately funny."
