Despacito singer Luis Fonsi was left helpless and heartbroken on Wednesday (20Sep17) as Hurricane Maria lashed his native Puerto Rico.

As Governor Ricardo Rossello declared a state of emergency for the island and a curfew until Saturday morning (23Sep17), Fonsi and fellow Puerto Ricans like Ricky Martin could only watch the news coverage and hope for the best.

The Category 4 hurricane, with winds of up to 175 mph, wiped out power and communications throughout the island, making it near impossible for Fonsi to keep in touch with family members in the eye of the storm.

"Horrible what is going through the island right now," he wrote in Spanish on Instagram beneath an aerial shot of his homeland. "it is very sad to read messages from my family."

Meanwhile, Yandel posted news video footage of the storm winds and flooding and offered up a prayer for those trying to survive Maria.

The storm comes as other parts of America and the Caribbean are recovering from hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
