Lorde compares Royals to cell phone ringtone

Pop star Lorde dislikes her breakout single Royals because the beat sounds like an old cell phone ringtone.

The singer was propelled to international fame last year (13) after releasing the track, which won two Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance in January (14).

However, Lorde hates listening to the original version of the single, branding it "disastrous" and "awful".

She tells Britain's Daily Record newspaper, "I listen to people covering the song and putting their own spin on it, and I listen to it in every single form except the original one I put out and I realise that actually it sounds horrible.

"It sounds like a ringtone from a 2006 (cell phone brand) Nokia. None of the melodies are cool or good. It's disastrous. Awful... But for same reason, in the context of the way I released it, it just worked out."
