Katy Perry: 'Writing new album helped me out of depression'

Katy Perry has confessed writing her new album, Prism, helped her get out of the depression she was under after divorcing Russell Brand.

The Roar hitmaker found herself in a deep slump last year (12), after the British comic filed for divorce in December 2011.

She previously admitted to Billboard that she had suicidal thoughts after her marriage breakdown and now she's opening up about what helped her come out of the dark time in her life.

Perry tells Entertainment Tonight, "I came out of a small depression by writing this record. There's a song called By the Grace of God which is a vulnerable song.

"One line talks about me laying on the bathroom floor and looking in the mirror and deciding to stay. You don't really have to read between the lines. There's really kind of heavy material there. It's one of the darkest songs on the record."

For the album, which comes out 22 October (13), Perry used the eye-opening experience to not only create honest music, but to work on her own well-being too.

"Everybody asked me how I got through that (dark time), but I think there's a higher power that was helping to push me in a more positive direction. I did a lot of self reflection. I did a lot of work on myself healed up some spots that needed to be healed. A lot of self- therapy."

Perry and Brand's split came just a year after they married in India, but the singer has found love again and is dating John Mayer.
