Kanye West condemned for Kazakh gig
Rapper Kanye West has come under fire from human rights groups for performing for the president of Kazakhstan at the weekend (31Aug13).
The Stronger hitmaker reportedly netted $3 million for playing a private gig in a hotel in Almaty for President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Saturday.
Footage of West performing his song Can't Tell Me Nothing at the
family wedding has surfaced online and infuriated activists, who
accuse billionaire Nazarbayev of acts of torture against his own
people.
Kate Allen of Amnesty International says, "Kazakhstan is a country
where Amnesty has concerns about the use of torture."
Critics of the Kazakh government are jailed and strict controls are
imposed on the media, according to monitoring organization Human
Rights Watch.
