Justin Bieber was denied chance to rap at BET Hip-Hop Awards
Legendary producer Dj Premier banned Justin Bieber from taking part in a freestyle rap performance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards after learning the teen pop star was planning to spit a verse written by Ludacris.
The awards ceremony has become known for its pre-recorded musical segments, known as cyphers, which this year (11) featured rappers Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Ludacris and B.o.B., as well as a rhyming Chris Brown.
But Premier reveals there was one eager participant he was forced
to reject - because he wasn't going to pen his own lyrics.
The producer says, "Justin Bieber even asked if he could do the
cypher. Everybody was worried that it might mess up the integrity
of BET but I was like, '(As) long as he got a dope rhyme, let him
spit.'
"But, then we heard, 'He wants Luda to write his rhyme.' I was
like, 'Oh, no, no, no, no, no.' If you ain't (sic) writing your own
rhyme, you can't do it. So, Justin, you gotta take a backseat on
that one. Write your own rhymes, honey. You gotta call him honey on
that one."
Bieber previously adopted the rap moniker Shawty Mane and showed
off his rhyming skills on R&B star Chris Brown's first rap
mixtape, Boy In Detention, earlier this year (11).
The BET Hip-Hop Awards took place in Atlanta, Georgia on 1 October
(11).
