Coldplay gave funnyman James Corden a birthday to remember on Sunday (21Aug16) when they invited him onstage to sing Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U.

The Into The Woods star was celebrating the eve of his 38th birthday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California when the headliners brought him up onstage.

Corden, who hosts The Late Late Show, stepped out and admitted he had no idea he'd feel so nervous when he agreed to sing with the band.

"I'll be honest, I didn't know how big it was when I said, yes," he said. "I'm a little nervous, but thanks to the four of you on behalf of this audience... for this incredible night that you have given us all."

Frontman Chris Martin then added, "This next one goes out to Prince, everybody. It's very important."

The faces in the crowd at the show included Reese Witherspoon, Meghan Trainor, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Matt Damon.

Corden was also treated to a birthday cake onstage and a rendition of Happy Birthday.

Martin and Corden became friends earlier this year (16) when the singer joined the funnyman and actor for a special segment of his Carpool Karaoke in the run up to Coldplay's Super Bowl Halftime Show preparations.

Corden regularly ferries stars around Hollywood, while singing their hits and other anthems as part of the TV segment.
