Green Day star's son wins coveted MTV award

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's teenage son has been given a big career boost as he follows in dad's footsteps - his band has won the underground college award which helped launch Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars' U.S. careers.

Joey Armstrong is the drummer for punk act Emily's Army, who have been named the latest recipients of mtvU's Fall Freshmen 5 honour, beating out Skrillex, Washed Out, Wallpaper, and SBTRKT.

Every semester MTV bosses identify five up-and-coming acts that are primed to jump from campus favourites to household names and fans vote for the winning act. As well as Winehouse and Mars, cult groups Silversun Pickups, Passion Pit, Wavves and Best Coast have received the award.
