Grammy couples react to amazing Macklemore & Ryan Lewis wedding ceremony
The couples who made history at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (26Jan14) by exchanging vows in the aisles of the Staples Center during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' set are still celebrating the magical moment.
The rap stars performed their gay rights anthem Same Love with Mary Lambert and Madonna, while Queen Latifah officiated 33 weddings in one of the big night's most showstopping moments, bring the Los Angeles audience to its feet.
Christine and Patricia Garcia appeared on news show Access
Hollywood Live on Monday (27Jan14) to describe the moment when they
said their 'I do's'.
Patricia says, "We got to know most of the couples, it was a
bonding experience, hearing all their stories."
Her wife adds, "We were all crying, having champagne."
Jason Miller and Yawar Charlie were another couple who got married
during Sunday's show, and they really had a brush with fame.
Charlie says, "We walk past Ringo Starr, he gives Jason a high
five, (then) he gives me a high five, then Paul McCartney sticks
out his hand and said, 'Congratulations', and I stuck out my hand
and for some reason. I didn't let go for a second, then he grabbed
Jason's hand and the three of us were holding hands and I was like,
'OMG (oh my God)!'"
Meanwhile, the ceremony was a big hit among the gay rights
community, and GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis has thanked
Macklemore & Lewis, Madonna and Queen Latifah for coming up with
the multi-wedding stunt.
She says, "When such a critically acclaimed and popular rap artist
puts marriage equality center stage at one of the biggest events of
the year, it is the latest in a long line of signs that our nation
not only accepts, but celebrates the love and commitment of gay
couples today.
"Macklemore and Ryan Lewis aren't only talented musicians, but are
setting the bar high for our allies around the country today."
And even Lewis was stunned by the big event, confirming his sister
Laura and her fiance Alex were among the 33 couples getting
hitched.
He says, "It was phenomenal."
