Ed Sheeran sings to sick superfan in surprise hospital visit
Ed Sheeran serenaded a sick superfan on Monday (07Nov16) after paying her a surprise visit at a hospital in Surrey, England.
Melody Meadows is battling Rett syndrome, a rare and severe brain disorder, at Epsom Hospital and her parents decided to try and cheer her up by launching an online campaign to land a special visit from her pop idol.
The effort caught the British singer's eye and he made arrangements
to stop by the medical center on Monday and make the young
devotee's dream come true.
During the visit, Sheeran gifted Melody with an autographed pink
guitar and delighted her with hugs and kisses, before staging an
impromptu bedside performance for the lucky fan.
According to DailyMail.co.uk, Ed treated her to renditions of his
hits Thinking Out Loud and Photograph, and a hospital staff member
revealed his music has been a constant source of comfort throughout
Melody's hospitalization.
"One of the problems is constant pain and she's on morphine," the
hospital worker told the star. "But we put you (his music) on and
it helps."
Sheeran also spent time greeting other sick kids in the ward, and
after the visit, Melody's mother, Karina, expressed her gratitude
to the kind singer.
"Melody absolutely loves Ed's music, and his lyrics mean so much to
us as a family," she said. "It was amazing to meet Ed, and everyone
could see just how impressed Melody was...
"We joke that Ed is Melody's boyfriend because she is so taken with
him, and now that she's met him in person a dream has come
true."
Meanwhile, ward medic Dr. Ruth Charlton added, "We are so touched
that Ed would take the time out of his busy schedule to visit
Melody and the other young patients on the ward.
"Melody was mesmerised by Ed, and it was a truly wonderful to see
how happy he made her. We would like to thank Ed for coming - this
was a very special day for our staff, our patients and, of course,
Melody."
It's not the first time Sheeran has made the effort to reach out to
sick fans. Last year (15), he recorded a touching video message for
a devotee battling leukemia, who was set to wed in hospital, while
he also paid a visit to a cancer sufferer in New Zealand after
learning she had missed his gig in Auckland because she was too
ill.
