Deadmau5 lands prestigious Gumball 3000 award
Music star Deadmau5 has been honored with the prestigious Spirit of Gumball award after completing the 3,000 mile supercar rally.
The dance music producer arrived in Ibiza, Spain on Wednesday (11Jun14) in a Ferrari customised with images of Internet meme Nyan Cat, dubbed a 'Purrari', and landed the coveted trophy for being the driver who best embodies the fun, free spirit of the Gumball 3000 rally.
As well as racing through eight cities in the U.S. and Europe with
124 other teams of competitors, deadmau5 - real name Joel Zimmerman
- helped launch the rally with a concert in Miami, Florida and made
bids at the Gumball Foundation's charity auctions along the rally
route.
Zimmerman spent $200,000 on a signed Gumball 3000 flag and a place
in next year's race and $72,000 on a pair of swimming trunks and a
Baywatch jacket worn by David Hasselhoff, who also drove in the
rally.
The music star wrote on Twitter.com, "WE DID IT!!! #teampurrari
takes home the spirit of the gumball award!!!! Unreal!!!!"
Money raised by the auctions, as well as the $64,000 teams pay to
enter each car, goes towards a number of charitable endeavors
including providing opportunities for under privileged kids around
the world.
