Charlize Theron fought back tears on Sunday (08Jan12) as she was honoured for her independent movie work at the Palm Springs Film Festival in California.

The Oscar-winning actress was the guest of honour at a star-studded gala held at The Parker Hotel, where she received the Variety Indie Impact Award.

Charlize Theron, who has appeared in low-budget pictures such as North Country, In the Valley of Elah and The Burning Plain, was handed the prize by Patton Oswalt, her co-star in new movie Young Adult.

Accepting the award, she gushed, "I never feel worthy of these things, so thank you to Variety, thank you."

Previous recipients of the prize include Philip Seymour Hoffman and Mark Wahlberg.
