Chance the Rapper sued for alleged copyright infringement

Chance The Rapper has been hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit over his 2012 song Windows.

Jazz composer-turned-lawyer Abdul Wali Muhammad, who was formerly known as Eric P. Saunders, has filed a lawsuit in which he claims Chance's song Windows, from his 2012 mixtape 10 Day, contains samples of Lonnie Liston Smith's song Bridge Through Time, which Muhammad filed a copyright claim for in 1979, a year before its release.

Muhammad claims the rapper never asked for his permission to use the song and when he first became aware of Windows in April (17), he contacted Chance's management to have the song pulled but had no response.

He is seeking damages and wants a judge to stop the 24-year-old from "copying, distributing, performing, selling or offering to sell Chance's song 'Windows.'"

According to Billboard, Windows contains excerpts from a remix of Bridge Through Time by Apollo Brown, the track's producer. Muhammad's ownership of the song is not clear.
