Angry Birds flock to top of box office
The Angry Birds movie is flying high after debuting at the top of the box office.
The animated film, based on the hit mobile game of the same name, took the number one spot after raking in $39 million over its opening weekend (20-22May16).
Globally, the movie has been a huge hit, earning an estimated $94
million and bringing its total to $150 million. Angry Birds also
landed the top spot in 48 markets around the world, including
China, where its $29.2 million haul was higher than both debuts of
popular animated films Zootopia and Big Hero 6.
Angry Birds, which features the voices of Sean Penn, Jason
Sudeikis, Blake Shelton, Danny McBride, Josh Gad, Game of Thrones
star Peter Dinklage, and singer Charlie XCX, managed to oust
reigning North American box office leader Captain America: Civil
War, which drops to the runner-up slot after earning another $33.1
million.
The latest Marvel movie, starring Chris Evans as the titular comic
book superhero and his fellow Avengers Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett
Johansson, and Jeremy Renner, now has a domestic total of $347.4
million, and on Friday (20May16), it hit a major milestone when it
passed the $1 billion mark in the global box office - becoming the
first movie of 2016 to do so.
Captain America: Civil War is now Disney's 10th billion-dollar
earner and the 19th highest-grossing movie of all time
worldwide.
Meanwhile, Zac Efron and Seth Rogen's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
debuts at number three with $21.8 million, while Ryan Gosling and
Russell Crowe's The Nice Guys comes in fourth with $11.3 million
after a soft opening.
Disney's The Jungle Book rounds out the top five with $11 million
in its sixth week of release, taking its domestic total to $327.5
million.
