50 Cent and Dr. Dre hit with lawsuit over P.I.M.P.
50 Cent and Dr. Dre have been hit with a lawsuit by a producer who insists he originally came up with the hit P.i.m.p..
Music producer Brandon Parrott states in legal documents obtained by TMZ that in 2001, he sent 10 tracks to Dr. Dre in hopes one of the artists on his Aftermath Entertainment label would record his music.
In 2003, 50 Cent released his debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin' on
Aftermath, and the best-selling record featured P.I.M.P., a song
which would eventually become his third single.
Parrott claims he received a call from a producer at Aftermath
around this time, and the unnamed music executive allegedly
admitted that Parrott's track, BAMBA, was sampled in P.I.M.P., but
had no idea it was going to end up in the final edit.
Parrott accepted the producer's ignorance and reportedly agreed on
a settlement, but now, after allegedly hearing interviews from
those involved in the recording of the song, he believes it was not
a mistake and label bosses took advantage of him.
Parrott has named 50 Cent, Dre and Aftermath in the lawsuit,
seeking an unspecified amount in overdue royalties.
P.I.M.P. was remixed in the summer of 2003, featuring Snoop Dogg,
Lloyd Banks and Young Buck, and that single peaked at number three
on the Billboard Hot 100, and also reached multiple top 10 charts
worldwide. It was later certified Gold by the RIAA for selling more
than 500,000 copies.
