Surviving 'The Day' with Dominic Monaghan & Ashley Bell

About this video
Actors Dominic Monaghan and Ashley Bell pay a visit to the Studio to keep things cheery even in the wake of their rather dreary, post-apocalyptic film, 'The Day'. They talk about the rigorous preparation they had to go through for the film, which included having to jump off the gravy train and into a rather strict diet. Which then leads us into a conversation about gaining weight and Dominic's obsession with Buffalo wings! Hosted by Oliver Trevena (@olivertrevena).

And that's the hardest thing. I can lose weight really, really quickly, but putting on weight is very, very difficult. But I would just eat
The public hates you. The public hates you now. That one line, you've just lost every fan you had.
I really don't.
That's the friendship is over now.
Yes, yes. That's true. We've just opened that whole box up. But I would do, I would do like, I'd eat buffalo wings and pizza and crispy cream doughnuts.
Is that your go-to? Buffalo wings and crispy You don't sound very British right now, Dom. You got to say. You've lost your roots.
It's true. Buffalo wings, crispy cream doughnuts. Who are you? Get out. No. Meat and potato pies and gravy. But uh, I do love buffalo wings. I'll like travel around different parts of America like trying out buffalo wings. I'm a bit of a buffalo wings snob.
Forgotten your roots. Um, do you get back home much? You are based here, right?
Yeah, yeah. I've been here now for like 10 years. I was in Manchester about two months ago.
Do you follow the footie? Keep track of the footie. Robin Van Persie got signed Arsenal. Who do you support?
Liverpool.
Oh man. Get out. You're from you're from Hastings and you support Liverpool.
Well, it's a funny, yeah. Older brothers all supported him, so, you know.
You studied at Cambridge, is this right?
I did study at Cambridge for a summer. Yes.
Did you compare English stories?
I don't think we did. I mean, we talked about English food that we both like.
Because I'd imagine that would get you into the character as well. The depressing English weather and this and the food and
Yeah, it was funny because we were on this diet. All we did pretty much talk about was, you know, meals we'd had and food and we were like, I I ate this soup. I really like, oh share, you know, and we would kind of all talk about it. It's like a sharing circle.
Um, so being that said that you this depressing movie, you have a thing with it really, the last exorcism and that. Is it?
Yes.
What's wrong?
I I have a I have a lot to express. I I don't know. I think they they find me. Um, even though they they are kind of heavier films, I think that, you know, what was so great about Nell and something the director really um, harked on for the character was that she had that spark of hope that she was going to get better, that she was going to fight the demon inside her. And then read the script for Mary, uh, you know, read the day, um, after kind of finishing press for the last exorcism because, you know, the character of Mary is is something you stumble upon a female that's that strong, that, you know, has that indomitable spirit was just something I had to fight for, you know, they they did want me to do my all my own stunts and to have that opportunity was
And you've done very well.
Thank you so much.
Yeah, amazing. Like amazing the movie.
Ashley's the real badass in the movie, you know, I mean she's the real scary badass that you have to keep your eye on. Like I'm really I think my character really trusts you.
Yeah.
You're like my guy. Cuz we we clear houses together. We go in. Right. There's a regime. I'm like, okay, I'll take the front door. You take the side door. And we do it. No one else does it.
Well, you look at her, don't you? And then you say, Clear.
Yeah, yeah. It's great. You've seen the film, yeah.
Oh, it was good. I felt, you know,
You felt connected in that moment.
Yeah, I did. Yeah. Clear. That's exactly what I did. I'm great. just saying. Like a mirror.
A cool thing that had happened was that you came in with a key. I also came in with a key and we hadn't even known each other at that point. We both came in with these these special talismans and we showed it to Doug the director and and he said, Yeah, he was like, just add whatever you want and if it works for your character, add it. So, and I said to him, I'd like to have a key, like there's a lock box somewhere, or a safety deposit box that I can't get to, but I care around my neck. And he's like, that's great. That works for your character. And then Ashley had the same. So we would talk about our multiple keys.
I would have totally thought that was fate. I mean, I would have gone somewhere completely different. I'd be like, have you seen the notebook? We both got keys. Let's go out. I love you.
The mystery of the keys. That's a good movie title. The mystery of the keys.
The mystery of the keys, the day two, the mystery of the keys. Oh, we just did that. Yeah. Well, now we've developed a new movie and script. You want to produce it?
Yeah, everything. I want the world. All right. Twice.
We can definitely wrap this up on that note then. Um, Dom, Ashley, thanks for coming in. Thanks for being happy as well. It's so nice to see you smile.
Oh, thank you.
Thanks, Georgie. It's nice to see you. You look so lovely smiling. And yeah, Georgie's happy as well. She was a little bit worried, got to be honest.
very sweet.
See, they're nice. They're nice people, Georgie. It's just movies. It's just the movies. You're fine. You're fine.
