Oscar-Winning Writer Jim Rash Transcends "TV Ugly"

About this video
Following Jim Rash's big Oscar win for co-writing 'The Descendants', it's back to his day job as the well-meaning Dean Pelton on "Community"! The funnyman pays a visit to the Studio to chat about his experience at the Academy Awards, including how Angelina Jolie (and her infamous right leg) inspired him! He also teases some soon-to-be-classic upcoming episodes of his wildly popular NBC series, and he explains the delicate semantics of the phrase "TV ugly". Hosted by Nikki Novak.

I read something about you're going to be showing a lot of midriff this season. Joel and I battle over a shirt, shirts off. So You do. You go through wardrobe and
Yeah, he'll go through the script and count how many times my midriff is shown, and then they have to add some for him. It's just it's a friendly, friendly narcissism.
What's up, guys? Nicki Novak here in the Young Hollywood Studio with Oscar winner and Star Community.
Thank you. Thank you. Wow. Wow, it's so loud. Just come into the studio. It's so loud.
Yeah, it is. Sorry to startle you.
No, we needed, you know, pop of the energy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Very few many come in the skirt, but very few can claim to have won an Oscar.
Oh, well, I'm happy to be the you know, first. Sorry to bother you. I'm Mad King. Yeah, come to pick up my daughter, Alexandra. Alex. Dad. What's up, Dad? What's happening? You need to come home and see your mom. I'm the backup parent. Well, I wouldn't say first, but ish.
Oh, then I'm out of the ish part is right.
No, I was told I would be the first. So I will be leaving your leather couch. Yes, yes.
Before we start rolling, you were talking about how it's very
Well, it just felt like we yeah, I felt we were getting ready to shoot a porn, which I'm not adverse to. Uh I just need some prep.
Well, you're an improv, so you can just kind of go with the flow, right?
Yeah. Give me a place where this porn happens. Anybody? Now, we are in Where are we in? South Beach. Okay, we're not usually supposed to take it when we're in the middle. We'll take it. We're in South Beach. Oh, man, South Beach. Let's get these clothes off. And seeing It's already the first line. Two rounds of applause, and you've been here two minutes. I love it. Yeah, with porn, you don't need much setup.
Let's talk about the Oscars first of all. Okay, sure. One of my favorite moments.
Oh, yeah. Oh, well. Yes, yes. I loved it. I loved it. It was so much fun. I had no no intention to think like, oh, man, this is going to be a uh this is going to be what it's going to be. I had no idea. Cuz I I didn't have any context for the dress having been presented on the red carpet. I I didn't I wasn't there for any of that stuff. Right. So I literally wasn't just going like, yeah, oh yeah, it wasn't I hung out in the green room of the Oscars and was like, I guess I should go out there. It's more exciting back here with the snacks. But uh I thought she was having a blast, and I thought she was sort of owning this. So when I got up there, I knew that we weren't going to be able to speak cuz Alexandra was going to speak on her behalf, and and the Academy says only one person speaks. They have all these little weird rules. Well, most people don't ignore them, and they just over talk, but we had sort of been in agreement. And I just like, I don't know, I feel proud about this achievement, and so I just sort of adopted her way of standing. So it really was more about me than it was about her. So community this season.
I read something about you're going to be showing a lot of midriff this season.
Oh, well, I think that's yeah. That might be every season. Uh there's there's always plenty. Joel and I battle over a shirt shirts off. So
Yeah, he'll go through the script and count how many times my midriff is shown, and then they have to add some for him. It's just it's a friendly, friendly narcissism. I love it. I saw on your your Twitter handle, you have an interesting Twitter handle.
Yeah, what is that? Rash's TV ugly. That came from, you know, when you sort of when you're do certain roles or stuff, you know, you go through these phases where like casting people, and people see you do something, so then they just naturally think of you for that kind of thing. And I remember one time uh my writing partner and I, we had written this um this pilot. This is years ago. And we were talking about different types of actors, and uh I mentioned an actor, and one of the executives was like, oh, you know, cuz I had said something about really really attractive. I thought, oh, I don't know. You might you might be too attractive, but oh, no, no. So, so, he's that's that's TV ugly. You know, I was like, and I just like, that's a horrible term. And I said if if if he, who was a super like a good-looking guy, is TV ugly, what list am I on? It's like, if we have to use him, you know, it's like and he and he said basically labeled me that I was on I guess on a list that's Nebish. Like I'm TV Nebish. No. He didn't say TV Nebish. And I just thought TV Jim is TV Nebish was okay, but I just enjoyed TV ugly as a phrase. Yeah, but I'm below TV ugly according to him.
And the community the cast is just incredible. I mean, are there any fun behind-the-scenes stories or things fun things to expect from from this season?
Uh well, there's great things to expect. I mean, we, you know, we have an episode uh coming up uh that sort of spoofs Law and Order, which is fantastic. I've heard it's just incredible. It's great. And it'll not disappoint. And I think that's the reason that it's out there. A lot of people are talking about it. And obviously I I look forward to our season finale uh uh and with John Goodman will be back and all that kind of stuff. And then as far as antics, uh it's always it's such a fun place to work. I mean, it's it's it's very general to say, we just have fun, but it it really is the case. Please watch community uh 8:00 on Thursdays, uh 7:00 Central. Yeah. And NBC.
NBC. Thank you. Yes.
