Linkin Park’s Heavy Writing Process

I love to eat food.

Do you love to eat food?

I love I love to eat food so much that I have like a uh master list that I keep in my phone of every place that I like anywhere in the world. Wow. So that way I can go to any city and I know right off I pull up the list, boom, 5, 10, 15 restaurants and by the way, and hotels and places to go.

Guys, your song Heavy is I mean, I don't even want to say you're back because I feel like anytime you guys want to do it, you guys do it and you did it. Heavy is top chart. I mean like it's

It's funny because with our stuff like for out for many, many years, we put out something and we know before we do it. Oh, this one's going to be polarizing. Like we're going to get like the back and forth of the whatever and this one I feel like we did that and we had, you know, the predictable like the hardcore metal fans, what the hell is this? And then a for me the most surprising thing is so many people who basically have never listened to Linkin Park before go like, what is this? I like this. Oh, the band has other albums, what do those sound like?

How did you put this song together?

Well, you know, interestingly enough, um this song was actually once it came together, it was amazing, but it was something that I think the three of us felt had a lot of potential when the early demo came out. It was like, man, this song it's got a vibe, but it's it's kind of it was a little bit of a Rubik's Cube.

Making this new album, any weird new ways that you wrote any songs?

Yes, backwards. And I'm serious about that. Seriously. We usually write track first. So we'd write um a lot of times I would start with piano and like production, like beats and stuff like that. And that stuff would grow into more of a song, a track, instrumental and then that would influence and inspire the vocals. This album was the opposite. We walked in the the door on day one and said, what do you want to write about? And that's one reason why this record I feel like I think we all have said at different points. Some version of this record is really um an emotionally driven album. It it's it's a really um it's an honest record like it comes from places where like I'm feeling I give you an example like I walked in the door one day and I said, I I want to write a song for my kids because I I feel like they're very strong willed and when they're 16, there's going to be like the screaming like, I hate you, Dad. You don't understand me and like slam the door in my face. So I thought wouldn't it be fun, wouldn't it be a cool idea to write a song to stick in a time capsule and send it to that exact moment. They shut the door, put on headphones and what comes on? So, that song's called Invisible and it's it's the next it's the next single off the record, we think and it's one of those ones that's just an example of how the writing process really affected like the whole way we did it on this on this record.

Okay, so here it is. Real quick. You guys real quick just give a little answer in between each one for the for the questions here. Okay. Okay. Who has the heaviest suitcase on the road between the three of you?

Definitely Chester. Cuz he changes at least six or seven times a day. And and you. And I have to deal with lots of other extracurricular things like photo shoots and stuff like that all the time. Gotta bring out the the gear. So I have to bring a bunch of crap. Skin care. Oh wow. exfoliate, you know, exfoliating cream. Okay.
