Hey everyone, this is Jasmine V and I'm here with Gray. And we're at the Young Hollywood Studios about to perform my single That's Me Right There. Let's go. Nobody gotta tell me how to do it. I told them from the start, I can hold it down. I can't even lie, I'm the truest. But I'm on everything. On everything. What can I say? Anytime, anyplace, I'm your honest. Oh yeah, oh yeah. They know what it takes that I handle this lady on it.
Hanging out with me on the couch, actress, singer, dancer, multi-hyphenate Jasmine V, hey.
Hello, hi.
Welcome.
Thanks for having me.
This is comfortable, huh?
No, this is comfy. You guys made sure I was comfy when I got here. I was like, oh, thank you.
Um, really exciting time for you right now. Things are really taking off. You have a single out.
Yes.
Oh, tell me about your single. It's with Kendrick Lamar. I mean,
Yeah, no, we put it out like a month ago, about a month ago and um, you know, it's with Kendrick. It's my first time putting out an official single on, you know, Interscope. But even putting out a single at all, actually. So it's like it's for me it's super big, but whatever, I could take it as. I'm just so blessed and I'm just the fact that I have somebody like Kendrick on my first official song that I've ever put out is a huge deal. like crazy.
Yeah. No big deal. Just Kendrick Lamar. One of like the biggest artists in hip-hop right now. I mean, but you're handling it well, it seems like.
Thank you.
How did that song come about?
Well, um, usually with most my songs I make sure they're always relatable, cause a lot of my fans are young girls. So, you know, the song is about, you know, having a man. You know, a boyfriend, or vice versa, for guys, a girlfriend. And um, you know, you're just confident in the relationship. You know that no matter what, it doesn't matter if there's like 80 girls in the room, as long as you know that you and your man are secure, that nobody can take him from you. So it's more so being confident in like who you are. And um, so when we got Kendrick on the song, when before we found out Kendrick was gonna be on it, we were just like, who could put on the song? It's a dope song. And then we brought up Kendrick. And then it happened and I couldn't say anything cause I didn't want to jinx it cause that would definitely be something I would not want to explain why he wasn't on it if I told everybody he was on it. So I was like, let me not say nothing.
Right. You just kept it to yourself for a while. Nice. Uh playing it safe, playing it cool. Uh you talked about, you know, it's about being in a relationship and also kind of ignoring everybody else and what they have to say about it. Are you speaking from experience?
Of course, I feel like, you know, um, I've been through it. I don't have a boyfriend now, not anymore. But um, you know, I did go through stuff like that. And um, and it's hard especially for girls, cause we are insecure and we do go through the motions of different things, you know, we don't like our hair, we don't like our body, we're insecure that our boyfriend's gonna cheat on us. So this song just really signifies basically saying like, I don't care who's out there, as long as I'm confident and I know who I am, my man's not going anywhere. Baby, believe me, this won't ever stop. And I can make this look easy. Got this on lock. That's me right there. Oh. Yeah, that's my man. Oh. Yeah, that's me right there.
Uh, but your fans, a lot of them got to know you because of oh, you know, some guy named Justin Bieber.
Yeah.
Like, whoever he is, right? Um, you were in his music video for Baby.
Yes.
Looking crazy. Uh, looking
what do you, what do you mean looking crazy? It's so so funny to look back at like, because I was 16 and I'm honestly 21 now and I was like, what was my hair? What was my makeup? What was my outfit? And it's just like, oh my God, what was the moves I was doing? It's just you look back on all of it and it's so funny. But that music video was such a great opportunity, great experience. I had so much fun.
And then you went on tour with Justin for a while.
Yes.
Right after.
Yeah.
And are you guys still friends? You guys still hang out?
No, we don't hang out. But we're really cool. If I see him randomly wherever, like we're cool. But I'm as if like friends friends,
Yeah, it's fine. Because you guys dated for a while as well.
We were so young. I was 16. He was 15. So I don't even know if that's considered dating. I think that's more like, hey, wanna be my girlfriend? Okay. Wanna go to the movies? Hang out, go on tour with me. Exactly. Yeah, there you go. Yeah. Can't nobody love a man. Like I love a man. That's me right there. That's me right there. I ain't never going nowhere. Ain't never going nowhere. They're right there. That's me right there. He already know I'm a rider. He got no worries cause I hold him down. They boy don't need no other in his life cause he got everything right here with me. What can I say? Anytime, anyplace, I'm your honest. Oh yeah, oh yeah.
And also your massive, massive following on social media. 1. 6 million Twitter followers. Like almost 800,000 followers on Instagram. I mean, how do you choose what you're gonna put out there on social media?
Well, for me, I'm always keeping it real with my fans and who I really am and I think it's just really
Jasmine V, right?
Jasmine V. Yeah. I think it's really important to be real and be 100% honest with who you are and that's how I've always been. So, anything that I post is just me. It's just like, whether it's a selfie that's not as, you know, it's not perfect. It's like a funny faces and it's just, you know, putting videos of me singing my favorite song in the car. I think it's always cool to show your personality and it's just not, oh, I only know her through music videos, or I only know her through her singing covers, or her in photo shoots. Like, no, I think it's really important that they get to see you for who you are rather than just so professional all the time.
When you have so many people following you, you've got to have some people who are less than kind. I'm sure you've
Yeah.
I mean, how do you deal with that?
You know, I choose not to even care. I used to care when I was younger. My mom and my manager used to be like, don't look at it. Don't look at him. You kind of can't, you can't help it sometimes, like it's right there, it's on your phone. You really can't. Yeah, it's like on Instagram then you have YouTube and then you have Twitter. You just want to, sometimes you just want to see what people are saying and a lot of people hide behind a screen and they're, they don't feel any type of way because at the end of the day, we don't know who they are, really. They don't know what they look like. They're hiding behind an icon and a fake name from Lord knows where. And I just choose not to even care.
It's a really nice message. You have a good head on your soul shoulders. If they look at me, I don't want you. And yeah, that's me right there. Oh. Yeah, that's my man. Oh. Yeah, that's me right there. Can't nobody love a man. Like I love a man. That's me right there. That's me right there. I ain't never going nowhere. Ain't never going nowhere. They're right there. That's me right there.
Is there anybody whose career you looked at and you're like, I, I want that. That's the person I admire the most.
You know, my idol's always been Alicia Keys. At a young age, my dad showed me who she was and then I was just so like, I don't even know. I just, I wanted her outfits. I wanted to sing all her songs. I did all her dance moves when she was in concert. I bought the hat. I bought the cane.
The cane? What her pictures are this? Oh my God, I hope they burned. My last question is, you are a great dancer. I am a secret backup dancer inside. So I would like to know, do you mind showing me some moves so that maybe one day I could be your backup dancer?
Of course.
Okay. Please, please. I would love.
Yeah, let's do this. I stretched and everything. No, I didn't. Okay. So, this is one of the moves, this is one of my favorite moves in That's Me Right There.
Okay. What am I doing here? Okay. I really want this. You want this Jasmine. You don't understand. I'm not doing the nae nae. I won't do the nae nae.
Okay, this is actually one of my favorite moves. Okay. It just goes like this.
Oh, I can't do that.
That's so easy. You got it. You got it. You got it. Just like move your leg in.
Okay. Just then stomp down. Am I doing it?
Yeah, you got it. You got it. You got it. Then you do this which is probably going to be my signature move.
Thank you. Thank you so much. You're such a sweetheart. I'm gonna use that next time. Oh, I am. Shit. That's me right there.
