"Glee" Star Matthew Morrison Returns to His Roots

Hey, it's Matthew Morrison here, about to do my interview for Young Hollywood.

I was just like, uh, Oh, yeah, sure, no, that was it.

This is pretty cool.

I mean, I don't think that the viewers get the whole vibe of this room, but it's pretty special.

Well, we try to give them, you know, like a view of it with you coming in with our camera and like making the intern's day.

I, I was trying to do that.

I was I tried to get everyone on camera when I entered.

And I know you're like rocking the suspenders.

We talked about it earlier.

I, I was gonna wear a suit in here because that is kind of the style of my album, but I'm feeling very Young Hollywood today and I was just like

Then you're like, I'm gonna go with the suspenders.

Uh, your new album, uh, it's called "Where It All Began".

So, are you getting back into your roots?

Are you going back to where it all began?

Pun totally intended.

Wow.

I try.

That's how we do it here at Young Hollywood.

Uh, absolutely.

You know, this is uh, you know, I think most people know me from Glee, obviously, but, uh, you know, this is uh, I had a 10-year career on Broadway before I even started that show.

So because of Glee, I've gotten to perform some amazing showtunes on the show.

You know, songs specifically written for theater, you know, on global television.

And hopefully that has translated and and given a new audience a taste of this kind of music.

You're the first artist signed to Adam Levine's new label?

Yeah.

So is the is the pressure on?

Are you and Adam bros enough?

That's the best thing about him.

There there has been absolutely no pressure in this process.

He's an artist himself, so he knows how an artist should be treated.

You think that Adam Levine is this kind of pop rock god.

But he he has such an affinity for the standards.

Right.

And he's like, I want to make this album for you.

I was like, okay, sure.

Yeah, okay, Adam Levine, who do you Right.

But we're here.

We're here talking about the album, so uh, he he came through for me.

That's awesome.

Yeah.

You said you had a chance to do showtunes on Glee, but this is old standards.

Like

But you know what?

The thing about these songs is they're timeless and they're iconic.

There's a reason that they've lasted this long.

And, you know, people like like Bublé and and and stuff that they want to sing these songs.

There's such a great storytelling aspect to them.

I feel like a lot of singers nowadays just kind of get on stage and sing a song.

I feel like you really get to act these songs.

Do you think the hardcore Gleeks are gonna see you any differently?

I, you know, I hope they do.

Like I said, I I'm I'm trying to bring this great classic music to a new audience, to people who you know, maybe maybe heard the song this stuff on Glee or or bought this album and uh, have a connection to it because it is great music that I I think needs to be heard and just great classic storytelling.

How do you think you've evolved from being on a TV show, then to doing studio movies, and now releasing your second album?

What's the biggest way you've evolved?

You know, the thing I I love the way my career has kind of played out.

I I started 19 years old, got my first Broadway show in the ensemble, playing like ensemble number two.

You're the tree.

You know.

Yes, very much.

Yeah.

I was a good tree.

Very leafy.

It paid it paid off for you.

Yeah.

And but then, you know, it just kind of some some of the kids on Glee, I I'm really proud of all the all the cast members on the show because I feel like everyone's really handled themselves well.

But to be put in the spotlight like that at such a young age, I'm so happy I didn't have to go through that.

Because you know, I spent my 20s, you know, making your mistakes.

Being an asshole, you know, exactly.

Um, so I I feel like I got to do that not in the public eye and I got the show when I was 30 and it was just it's just it was like a perfect time.

But you know, this show it it I've learned a lot from it.

It's it's been a great learning experience.

I'm happy to see where the you know, the career goes from here.

Yeah, and you're doing it, well, you're going on tour.

You leave for London tomorrow, right?

Tomorrow.

Yeah.

That's amazing.

Yeah, it's not like a proper tour, it's like a like a little mini tour.

So there's no one like counting your blue M&M's in the background.

The only thing I need on my rider?

Yeah.

I was in choir in high school.

Yeah.
