Fred Armisen

About this video
Known for his memorable characters on Saturday Night Live, Fred Armisen has created a new roster of comedic faces to explore the often mundane nature of the city of Portland in IFC's "Portlandia." Already renewed for a second season and hosting its first season finale on February 25th, Fred describes why the new locale is such fodder for jokes. He also explains some of his favorite SNL guests. An avid musician as well, we're taken out with a little duet. Hosted by Amanda Champagne.

For those of you watching, the edit their editing room is like right in the next room. It's the coolest thing. They've got like look at they have a dressing room here. It's all Deluxe zone. That's a real view. That's not a backdrop. I'm not kidding. Look at this. This is too tiny for a candy. Please don't do that. Hey, this is Amanda Champagne and we're here at Young Hollywood with Fred Armisen. Thanks so much for coming by today.
My pleasure. Thanks for having me.
I caught up with Miley Cyrus last weekend.
What do you mean you caught up with her? She's a superstar. She's like one of the most famous people in the country.
No, huge. Had like three seconds for me. The only thing I asked her was you're doing SNL coming up, you know, she's telling me she's just really excited about the whole thing. I think it's going to be great because, you know, she also comes from music and stuff so they could do some good musical stuff. And Vanessa Bear who is uh Kevin now doesn't impress her. And I'm not saying she's going to do her. I don't know yet, but um that's going to be I'm going to like to see that dynamic. I'm going to have to lose candies. Oh sorry. Look at this. This is too tiny for a candy. Oh, this is difficult to unwrap. I'll do it. He's about.
No, I got it.
Um, so how has SNL been this season? Who has been your favorite guest host?
Um everyone brings something good for different reasons. I'll tell you who I really liked. Jim Carrey.
Why is that?
Cuz he's amazing. Cuz he's like, he's he's really amazing, but he's also like he's like a craftsman when he comes up. I can't believe I'm saying that here. I'm like so like it's such a like arty word to use, but he's really like hands-on. I also liked working with Dana Carvey because he was my hero. Like I I watched him on SNL. And I I thought he was so great. This candy is okay. It's good. It's it's an after-dinner mint.
Portlandia. Um, it's doing amazing. It was picked up for a second season after it was only three episodes.
Oh, we did um that's right. It's six total and then three episodes in they renewed it and I'm really happy about it. I get to go to Portland.
Oregon?
Yeah. The dream of the 90s is alive in Portland.
Portland.
Portland. The dream of the 90s is alive in Portland. The tattoo ink never runs dry.
I was wondering how you ended up in Portland because you do SNL in New York all the time. Right. Opposite ends of the country, so how'd you end up over there?
Um I was just got on a train and I was supposed to go to Miami and then the driver, the train driver didn't know he was going. He made a right. And he just kept going and he went. No, I'm just kidding. Um, no, my friend Carrie lives there and um, I used to go visit her all the time and we'd make these videos. And then it was based in Portland. So we're like, let's make a TV show here and then there we were, we just stayed there. And and I do that over the summer. So SNL is New York in the winter and then summer.
So um, what are some of the characters from Portlandia that have been some of your favorites?
Uh, I like doing this one that's a feminist bookstore. You know those stores that are like really righteous and very very political. Uh, it's like these two ladies who work there, me and Carrie do them and they work at a store called Women and Women First and it's just very serious and very they're just very almost mean to all the people who come in. Hello. Hi. We have a strict rule that you can't use the restroom unless you're a paying customer. Mhm. It's clearly stated on the door. Oh, that's what that. You know, when I went in, I the number four threw me. I was like, you don't you couldn't read it? I spell things out, so.
And have you had any friends from SNL who've asked to come on to season two?
Yeah, it's really funny. Andy asked to do it. And I'm like, absolutely. I mean, I would have I love all the cast members of SNL so much that I'm like if we could get them it would be awesome.
Is it kind of like the same SNL like that kind of creative path to create the characters and segments or is it does it feel totally different?
It's a little different because um, SNL has got the luxury of having a live audience. So we could feel stuff out and you can hear if the audience liked something or not. This one it's a big gamble or like I think this works. Yeah. And like we'll have a crew and we'll be like, does that seem funny to everyone? And they'll be silent. We're like, oh well, we'll see. But a lot of that's the editing.
Yeah, definitely. By the way, for those of you watching, the edit their editing room is like right in the next room. It's the coolest thing in the whole world. Hollywood tour. They have a whole operation. They've got like look at they have a dressing room here. It's all Deluxe. Make no mistake. It's all Deluxe. That's a real view. That's not a backdrop. I'm not kidding. That's the real view. And then and then yeah, they do all their editing right over there. It's like it's the best setup, the best idea. And one of our favorite parts is we always have a bunch of musical instruments. And we've got a guitar here. I didn't know you played. Do you want to kind of take us out with a little song?
Sure. Look, this stuff can be instruments, right? What you know about a little drum set? You don't play. We'll just improvise. Yeah. I wish I could think, you know how to sing? I wish I could sing too.
That is from Young Hollywood. Thank you very much. Amazing. Please don't do that.
