Young Hollywood

Hey guys, you're hanging out in the Young Hollywood studio with Madelin and Zoey Deutch. How's it going, guys?

Zoey Deutch

Hi!

Madelyn Deutch

Thanks for having us.

Young Hollywood

Now, who's older? Who's younger?

Zoey Deutch

I'm older.

Madelyn Deutch

Three and a half years older.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. So who's more mature though? Cuz see my little sister's more mature than me. She's like four years younger.

Zoey Deutch

I would say you're definitely more mature than.

Madelyn Deutch

Really? I don't think. I think different things. I think in different areas. We're really different. So when it comes to like business, she's brilliant. And I'm like so do I press send if I want someone to get the email? Or like I'm not totally sure how to do this thing.

Zoey Deutch

Yeah, but I have younger sibling syndrome. So I walk in for I'm like, pay attention to me. Like I need to love. Yeah, thanks. I'm here. Yeah.

Madelyn Deutch

Or like you'll ask me questions that you don't need to ask me.

Zoey Deutch

Oh, I've never.

Madelyn Deutch

You'll be like I've got black converse and white converse. Which converse? And I'm like, really? Honestly, like any converse will do.

Zoey Deutch

Every Every Every time I've ever gotten my nails done, I've texted her like, should I do ballet slippers or should I go for something else? Just something crazy? Like I can't even make it.

Young Hollywood

That's sweet cuz you respect her opinion, right? It's like you you get each other's advice.

Madelyn Deutch

Is this too codependent?

Zoey Deutch

It's very codependent. Super codependent.

Young Hollywood

See, that's fine.

Zoey Deutch

But we're we're we're we're we're working on. We're heavily in therapy. Question mark.

Young Hollywood

So how did you guys get into the whole acting world? How did you guys get into this together?

Zoey Deutch

We just grew up in it. Like I think so people know about our mom and our our dad, you know, our dad's been a director for a million years. Our mom's been an actress for such a long time. But they don't know that our family actually has been in entertainment for really even longer than that. Our our grandpa was like the head of music publishing for United Artists. Gave Buddy Holly his first publishing contracts. Stuff like that. So it's it's been really around forever. We're just super entrenched in it. And I feel like it's kind of enmeshed with our sort of makeup as human beings.

Madelyn Deutch

I think I definitely agree with you that um it is embedded in our DNA via Osmosis. We've picked up on so many different things that would be hard to identify. They just are in us. But I also think that it comes from a different place too. I was reading too. Cuz yeah, it's like when you grow up in a family of doctors, you'll probably be a doctor, you know? At least they hope you will be. It's it's just what you're used to.

Zoey Deutch

I think they hope we would be doctors too.

Madelyn Deutch

I was just about to say, they were really hoping we'd be doctors. They tell her like, Zoey, you can stop anytime. You can go go to law school. You can do it whenever you want. You just go.

Young Hollywood

It's good cuz you guys got to work on this movie together as a family, right? You guys and your mom. You produced it, right? You wrote the screenplay.

Madelyn Deutch

I wrote the screenplay and I wrote the score for the movie. And I starred in it alongside her. So we just did this so we could like give each other jobs. Get each other employed.

Zoey Deutch

To be able to have some semblance of control in an environment where you're usually at the mercy of so many other people's so many strangers' opinions and decisions and wants and needs and to be able to, you know, start it from the ground up and have it be as grassroots and personal as it was, um this will be forever one of the most special things that I've been a part of.

Madelyn Deutch

You're post-breakup. You're pre-real world. Why don't you take the year for yourself? You're a millennial. You can try the whole like having fun in your 20s thing. Smooth move. Bet you get a lot of girls on their backs every day. I'll work on that one some more.

Young Hollywood

So The Year of Spectacular Men. I already love the title.

Madelyn Deutch

Thank you.

Young Hollywood

So Zoey, can you tell us about the movie?

Zoey Deutch

Uh, so So it's a sci-fi thriller. Takes place on his tropical thriller, futuristic. The Year of Spectacular Men is about a girl named Izzy. She's 22. She gets out of college and doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, which I think is a huge um sort of issue that's kind of swept my generation. I call it millennialitis. She is sort of floundering. She moves from New York back to her hometown of Los Angeles to move in with her younger sister who happens to be, funny you should ask, a lot more mature than her. And it's about five guys she dates over the course of this year. There's these five love stories that happen, but ultimately the movie is really about it's a love story between sisters. Four sisters, made by sisters. So that's you can have the dynamic.

Young Hollywood

But you're the more mature one in the movie, right? Technically. And you have like a full-time boyfriend, but you get to flirt with a lot of cute boys in the movie, right?

Zoey Deutch

So many cute boys.

Young Hollywood

How did you choose the boys?

Madelyn Deutch

Zoey had done Vampire Academy with Cameron Monaghan and she had done a movie called Good Kids. Good Kids with Nick Braun. And so we began there because I became friends with both Nick and Cameron through Zoey and we had good relationships with them. I sort of sent them the script very early and was like, is this something you'd be interested in? Nick was the first person to sign on. He was so generous and he made me really believe in myself as a writer. He was like, he really gave me the confidence to believe in the script because it was the first person outside the family who was like, no, no, this is good. Yeah. And I love him forever for that. And then from there, uh really for me personally though, I mean, Brandon T. Jackson is such a star. He's so amazing in the movie. He's so good. And Zach Roerig as well. Um but for me, I really freaked out when we cast Jesse Bradford cuz Bring It On was my favorite film ever ever ever growing up. Yeah. So I was really geeking on a level. Jesse, I'm sorry. It was really I freaked out. It comes out. I freaked out.

Young Hollywood

Well, thanks guys so much. I can't wait to see the movie. You guys have to check out The Year of Spectacular Men. Woo!

Zoey Deutch

Yay!

Madelyn Deutch

Thank you for having us.

Zoey Deutch
