Hello, I'm Billy Boyd, and this is BG, and we're going to sing the song from The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. This song's called "The Last Goodbye." I saw a light fade from the sky. On the wind, I heard a sigh.
So, um, because the song "The Last Goodbye", and this is the last of the films, we have a little game for you called First and Last. And we're going to ask you what your first and last. How does that sound to you?
I love games! Terrific. What do I win?
Uh, Young Hollywood hat. Magic. Talk about your first time on set for Lord of the Rings. That first experience.
First time on set was the four hobbits. There's a scene for anyone who's seen Lord of the Rings, where The Black Rider appears. The Black Rider comes from behind a tree, and we all hide underneath a, a kind of log. And that was the first day. Really? That was the four hobbits.
Last, last scene you filmed for Lord of the Rings. The last moment.
It was in Return of the King, and there's a scene in Minas Tirith, when Gandalf and me are sort of fighting orcs, and one of the orcs almost kills Gandalf, and I save him. And he looks at me and, and says something nice, because he's not very nice to me during the, during the whole thing. And, uh, that was the last scene that I did. I saved Gandalf. I saved the wizard.
First kiss.
Oh, I kissed a girl. I used to live in a place called Cranhill in, in Scotland. And I had high flats, you know, apartments, and a, a tall block. So you had to get in an elevator. And I get in an elevator with Suzanne McDonald, and I kissed her. There's a shout out for you, Suzanne McDonald. I kissed Suzanne in an elevator. Wow. Karen O'Neil was a better kisser, though.
Oh, that's not nice. You can't say that.
Well, she was, she was my next kiss, and it wasn't even in an elevator.
Last time you cried watching a chick flick.
Do you know what? I cried during The Hobbit last night.
Did you really? That's not a chick flick, though, but that counts.
Can because I really did.
Did you really?
It was the second, third time I saw it, and I, I really loved it. I thought it was an amazing film. But something about last night. And I, I spoke to Peter Jackson about it. I was like, did the sound change or something? Did something different? Because the last half hour, I couldn't stop crying.
Really?
Yeah. I was, I was completely engulfed in tears. I couldn't think straight.
Really?
All I wanted to do was I love it. Hold Suzanne McDonald. Yeah. You need her to turn, you need her back. I turn at last to paths that lead home. And though where the road then takes me, I cannot tell.
Um, this single, "The Last Goodbye," um, I, you saw the film. You saw The Battle of the Five Armies, and I heard that you wrote it, like an hour after seeing the film. Is that true?
That is, it's sort of true. It's okay. Yeah. I, I went down to New Zealand. They asked me to go down and, um, and work on the song. And then one day they said, "Okay, it's, it's kind of, you can watch it now." There's going to be a lot of green screens, and it's not finished, but, and by the end of that day, the song, as it is just now, was pretty much in a good place, you know.
It's gonna be, you know, it's gonna be the, play in the end credits of the last Hobbit film. And it's very soft and it's very quiet. Was that intentional? How did it come about?
Yeah, we tried a few things like that as well. And we wanted it to be sort of Bilbo's voice, as a, as a hobbit. It's like a guy coming back from war, and sort of dealing with that. So it is kind of introverted because of that. But on top of that, we wanted it to be sort of a song for the fans, really.
It's a lot of Oscar buzz about this single. Would it be strange for you to actually win an Oscar for singing?
Yeah, that's a really good point. That was a very good question there. Thanks. I came up with one. No, they're all been good. But, yeah, it would be weird, wouldn't it? Because, yeah, I have sang. Like BJ who we're playing music with there. Who's in your band? Who's in B-K- K? It's uh, the new single from our band. Our band's called Beecake, and the new single's called "Perfect Time." And there's a video for it. I directed it. Anyway, this is "Perfect Time" acoustically. One, two, three, four. The second hand can fly as we watch numbers rise. Given scores to our adventures. Don Monahan sent me, he was in Spain, and he sent me a picture of a cake in a bakery that was covered in bees. He would. Because it had pollen on it or something. And people were still eating it. And He sent this picture. Beecake. And I thought that's a good name for a band. Wow. Uh, and then we did Beecake. And we a moment there was a question about About the Oscars. Oh, yeah. So I have been, I've, I've played in bands with BJ since I was 14, you know. Before I was an actor. But it would be very weird, I think, after working as an actor for 25 years or 20 years or whatever it is, to, to then, you know, have a musical. I'd like it. It'd be it'd be something quite ironic and but lovely about it. And also because it's part of these films, and I feel that's such a part of my life, you know. To get the chance to go back and go back as a musician is a, is a really, it's a big honor, I think.
Serendipity almost. Wow, that's a cracking one. We should just go out on that. And I want to thank you for coming in. It was great to see you again.
I've enjoyed it. I've enjoyed it. Oh, hat, Young Hollywood hat. I was promised a hat. Because your answers were so prompt. Well, and a bell. And there was a bell, too. You've got to watch out. I used to be a boxer, and it never leaves you. Honestly, I could have knocked someone out. I thought you were I better move out of the way. Thank you very much. There you go. That is so Young Hollywood. This is the the only time we have is now. Don't waste that time with wear and how.
