Young Hollywood

What's up, guys? Nicki Novack here in the Young Hollywood studio with Ayalet Zurer, Mark Duplass, and their darling companion Casey the Dog. Say hi, Casey. Say hi, Casey. Oh. Okay. We don't have to be angry about it. You just want you to say hi. How big a diva is Casey?

Mark Duplass

Well, here's the deal. Okay, we had what's called a double banger trailer on set. Ayalet was on one side and I was on the other.

Young Hollywood

What's a double banger first of all?

Mark Duplass

Oh, wow. It sounds much worse than it is.

Young Hollywood

It sounds really bad, actually.

Mark Duplass

No, it just it just like on an independent film if there's a trailer at all. It's usually a it's usually like split so that like we each have our own little cubbyhole. You can you can feel when someone moves around.

Young Hollywood

Right. Use the bathroom.

Mark Duplass

Definitely the bathroom. Casey had his own trailer. So you know, it's part of the thing. Have you met Dr. Buhla?

Young Hollywood

Who?

Mark Duplass

The uh veterinarian. He's going to stop by.

Young Hollywood

Veterinarian makes house calls?

Mark Duplass

He's very attractive. Did you see that? Dogs are like the new are the new big stars in Hollywood. Casey definitely made more money on this movie than we did. 100%.

Young Hollywood

Really?

Mark Duplass

No doubt about it. Freeway.

Young Hollywood

I heard that you actually got a dog after this film.

Ayalet Zurer

We um actually shot in a shelter and I thought that would be like my chance to get a dog because I don't think I can go into a shelter. It's really sad for me. So um yeah, there was a puppy there and I just uh I took him and I flew him back home and then he nearly died and then he survived and then he was supposed to be a really tiny little puppy. They promised it's got Look at that. Look at that. Look at that. ears.

Young Hollywood

You said they lied to you. They sold you a little dog.

Ayalet Zurer

They sold me a little dog cuz I wanted a little you know.

Young Hollywood

Well, it's easier to travel.

Ayalet Zurer

Right, exactly that was my point. And um and then I had to travel and probably a month or like two months after we got him and I came back in two weeks later and he was this size.

Mark Duplass

Casey behave. Casey is so obnoxious.

Young Hollywood

I can see that. He never stops talking. Just trying to steal the spotlight the whole time. Can can Casey do some sort of a trick for us?

Mark Duplass

Casey's drunk right now, guys. He's been doing tricks all day for press. It's like whatever. Watch this. Watch this happen. No, that one. The other one. This one this one what? What do you want me to do? No, he's going to cover. Watch this happen. It's amazing what dogs. There's the cover. All right. And Mr. Duplass, allergic to dogs?

Mark Duplass

I'm allergic to dogs. This is what I do for my art. This is great right now. If I start wheezing, um I have an EpiPen right behind me. Just stab into my throat. No, no, no. Right here, right here. And I'll be fine.

Young Hollywood

So, you've you've been you've been directing a lot. You've been writing a ton. What made you go, okay, I'm I'm just going to act in this film? I mean, the cast is insane.

Mark Duplass

Well, I mean, you know, there's usually three qualities you look for in a movie. You know, it's like how good is the script? How's the cast and how's the director? And there's a dog in it. And there's a dog in it that will make me sneeze. Um, you know, you're lucky if you get two of those qualities working for you and this movie, you know, was incredible.

Movie Clip

Hi, Dad. Ask Mama if she remembered to pick up my stuff at the cleaners. Turn around. Why? I got to go back. I saw something. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Mama, are you sure about this? There you go. We're not getting a dog, right? Who are you naming him? Freeway. You lost the dog while you were talking on the phone. Oh.

Mark Duplass

I grew up watching all of Lawrence Kasdan's movies. I watched The Big Chill and I was obsessed with Accidental Tourist. Not to mention he wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark, people. You know, when he asked me to do it, I was just like, well, of course I'm going to do this and and then, you know, Ayalet and I quickly sort of bonded um because we realized like we were the two rookies.

Movie Clip

Hey, Sheriff. Joseph Winter, could we talk? Who? Joseph Winter. Well, look, tomorrow's Monday. I'll be in the office all day, Joe. Yeah, no, I understand. I'm sorry about that, but it's an emergency.

Mark Duplass

Ayalet and I blew everything we made on the movie inviting the wonderful cast out to dinner every night because every time we would take them out, we would get a new story of all these people they worked with. It was like, oh, let me tell you about the first time I auditioned for Woody Allen.

Young Hollywood

Oh, do tell us one. Tell us one of the greatest like what was one of the greatest.

Ayalet Zurer

I I loved um Diane Wiest's story about how she um auditioned for Woody Allen and I think she came off uh theater show I think it was Hannah and Her Sisters and it went she went to the casting um office and he was reading a newspaper behind like the camera and she asked for another take and behind the newspaper she just heard like something like that. Like a puff. And she you know, she was really mad and and she thought that went really bad but eventually she got the part.

Mark Duplass

Casey doesn't listen. He's not well behaved. So Casey was trying to steal scenes from Diane Keaton. She wasn't trying to steal them. She just kept saying where's my close-up. I just thought it was weird. But

Young Hollywood

Thank you all so much for coming in.

Mark Duplass

Thanks for having us.

Ayalet Zurer

Thank you, Casey.
