Hey guys, Leslie Robbins here in the Young Hollywood Studio, joined by two-time Tony Award nominee, star of the hit Hamilton, Aaron Burr, sir, Mr. Joshua.
Thank you.
How are you?
I'm doing great.
Talk about, to use a phrase from the show, what's it like to be in the eye of the hurricane that is Hamilton?
It feels incredible. And there's just so many moving pieces around the show, and the audience is a huge piece of that. And the audiences that we've had so far have been wild. LA's been excited and ready, so ready to give it to 'em even more.
Now, Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of this show, brought you guys all over from In The Heights. Did he kind of give you any direction on where to take this? Or he just said, "Dude, you got this. Take it."
I think he was like, "Papi, go do your thing. Do your thing, Papi. Do your thing." That's like the, you know, he's just the best advice he gave. But I think with him and, you know, the creative team, they were really great about not making us do a duplicate of what we saw of what we've seen before or what we heard before. They let us bring ourselves fully to it. And Lin is a big part of that. He's like, "We know that these actors are special." I still remember being in The Heights, and when I auditioned for that, he was like, "Dude, I'm just glad I'm glad we got you in this ensemble now because in a couple years, you're gonna be doing all this other stuff." And, you know, it's great to hear that from someone that you're just you're literally coming up with. And then years later, you're like, "Here we are doing this thing." Like, it it's incredible.
Speaking of doing this thing, I wanna do a little dancing.
You wanna do some dancing?
I do. I do. I watch it, and I'm an old musical theater girl. I'm not saying I'm you, let's let's understand this, but you just sit there and I wanna do the dance. You you one of those people dancing in the in the
I was I was I was dancing, I was crying. There's a lot of emotion going on. Look, if we're gonna get down, I gotta get down.
Wait, is is that how you get ready for Aaron Burr?
Yeah, I crack my I just cracked my neck that way and then I'm ready.
That's it? Top stage. Just like that. That's your ritual?
No, that's one of the one of the many things.
What else you got? What else you got?
To get ready for the show, you would think I'm getting ready for a game of basketball or football. I mean, shuffle side to side. Sometimes I'm literally doing like 10-yard sprints back and forth because you want to get your heart rate up. You know, I should should you stand up? Let me see. Okay. Took his shoes off, my friend. He took the shoes off. Okay. So, before I go on stage, I might do a little I might do some sprints, I might do a little dance combination. We're gonna do something I would do. Is that cool?
Yeah.
All right, so, right? We're just gonna start with a simple left uh left right left right. Then we're gonna add arms.
I think you're lying to me. You don't really do that.
What? What? Am I hot? Am I hop? Am I hop? You need to come backstage because this is exactly This move right here, I'm gonna do it in a fast version. We'll be like, Me and Mat, the guy who plays um Madison, yeah, love him. We do that every single day.
Are you kidding?
No.
Wait, you're not lying.
No, no, no. This is 100%. I'm not No, that move right there, right? And we do variations of it sometimes we slow it down and slow it down. Yeah, that's exactly what Oh, she's ready.
You got a vocal warm-up? Let me see. What you got? Whoa. There's a lot.
So, one of the vocal warm-ups I do is just as low as you can to as high as you can. So it's like, All right, do it with me, ready?
Yeah. Yeah. Aaron Burr, sir, killing it at the Pantages. It's an honor. Thank you for coming to our studio.
Thank you for having me.
Had so much fun with you. You know how much I'm coming backstage and to the party next time.
That's right. I'll expect you there.
Done and done.
