You have an amazing voice. I don't want I don't want to put you on the spot but I kind of do.
Oh my god, I didn't know I was gonna have to sing.
Do you mind?
The world is so broken and sometimes it leaves you cold.
From The Passion Live, Shane Harper hanging out with me. Hey, welcome to our humble abode. This is nice. You grew up in San Diego? Are you from San Diego?
I grew Yeah, I was born in La Hoya. Um grew up in Oceanside, then Orange County. Nice. Now LA. So Wow. I've been migrating up the coast like
Right, you're going north.
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I don't know where I'm gonna end up, like Portland or something, but yeah, but
Well, I did a little bit of digging. Not only did you dance, but you also, you're into action sports. You you skateboarded and you surfed, I guess.
I did. Yep. Lots of skateboarding. My mom didn't like it, but lots of skateboarding. Okay. Lots of skateboarding. Uh lots of surfing, my dad's a great surfer, so I kinda lived at the beach when I was younger, so.
Do you still do it? Do you still get out?
I still try to get out. Yeah, yeah. If I Yeah, I like to go to Malibu and catch some waves.
I've probably seen you out there before. Really? Do you live out there?
Maybe. Okay.
Do you live out there?
I don't, but I wish, but I drive out there. Okay. Yeah. I love I love Malibu. It's it's incredible. And the there's some really nice breaks out there. So, I doubt, yeah, I like to I like to get. Nice. A little further south than I. It's it's nice. It's a good being out on the water. It's just like a good break from everything. It kinda clears your head.
Yeah. No phones allowed.
No, that's the cool thing. You can't take your phone into the ocean. You can't. Well, you can, I'm sure, but I I I'm not gonna work to find ways to make that happen. I'd rather leave it on the beach.
Right. I saw that you previously said that someone you like to collaborate with is Phil Collins. Yes. Is that still Is he still number one on your list?
That's still on the He's still number one on my list. Yes, I think so. Well, it's between him and Chris Martin of Coldplay. Okay. Because like Chris is like one of my favorite songwriters, singers. All right. Performers. But the Phil Collins thing? But the Phil Collins thing is like Yeah, I'm a big Phil Collins fan. So, my uncle's a drummer, like, obviously, Phil Collins is pretty revolutionary in the world of drumming. Because he's doing it at the same time. Not not just pop music. Right. And he he kinda like pioneered all these these these sounds and the style and Sure. And, um, aside from his incredible songwriting and his performing, Um, and selling, you know, 100 million records with Genesis and Phil, like, he's, you know, he's a rock star.
You know a lot about Phil Collins.
I do. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do. Yeah, I'm a I'm a big fan. And apparently, he's coming out of retirement is what I hear. Yes. And he's gonna do so maybe there's an actual
There's potential.
Possibility for it. I feel it. I feel it in the air. Phil, if you're watching, Let's Let's Let's do something. Let's do something.
I also read that you are a shower singer.
I am. Yes.
What is Is it a Phil Collins song that is probably
Okay. Yeah, it probably is. Yeah, or something by Katy Perry, I don't know. It's just
Katy Perry, really?
It's You know, she's got good anthems.
Yeah, what's like What's what's like a go-to Katy Perry song?
California Gurls, probably.
Really?
It's a great song. It's a great song. No, probably not in the shower, actually. It's probably not in the shower. Okay. Actually, sometimes it sometimes it gets more melodramatic and kinda is like some old Snow Patrol song that I like.
Oh my god. What's his dad?
I love Yeah, but I love that stuff. It's so good. I it I think it's either there's no real middle ground for me. It's either like super It's like probably either super energetic or really sad. Oh. Because like I love like Let's see, like Damien Rice songs or something like that. Do you ever listen to Damien Rice?
Oh, yes, I've broken up to many of his songs. So Thanks for reminding me, Shane.
Sorry. I'll see myself out.
You have the saddest shower songs ever.
I'm sorry. Yeah. Well, you know, sometimes that's fitting.
You are in The Passion Live, which is kinda a never before done, never before seen, broad broadcast endeavor. Yes. I mean, what's it like being a part of a production of this scale?
Um, it's it's unbelievable. There's so many moving parts. Um, it's obviously live, so there's that. That pressure. Yeah, yeah. But I mean, it's it's just a different kind of thing. I grew up doing theater. I've done a lot of film and television. Um, I've done I've done some work in in, you know, live like sitcom, you know, with the live studio audience, you know, stuff like that. But it's just such a.
You get another take. You get another take.
It's just such a different thing, you know. It's like you're you're you're in a movie, but essentially, it's being broadcast to, you know, millions and millions and millions of people. So, it's just kind of a little extra.
No pressure.
Yeah, no. It'll be fun. I'll have a good time.
And you're doing this in New Orleans, which we were just talking about what a what a great eating town. Fantastic. It is. It is. And how you tried alligator for the first time down there.
I did. Yeah, I did.
Verdict? What?
Love it. Yeah. But anything that you that you grill in butter and garlic is probably gonna be fantastic. Or or or fry. Yes. In batter. Probably probably. If you put it in batter on it, exactly. I'm gonna like it. I don't really know.
You probably like it. Yeah. You can throw some hot sauce on there, like you're speaking my language. I put hot sauce on everything.
Do you?
With your What's your hot sauce of choice?
Um, probably Cholula.
Me too. Really? Yes. I'm way more Cholula Yes, pounded out. Okay. So, we have to explore this hot sauce thing. Okay. Yeah, there you go. Um, I'm much more Cholula than Tapatío. That's my thing, you know, I don't know, I can't get into. And Tabasco? I know, I'm just gonna like it.
No, I can't get it. I can't get into Tabasco. Okay. Actually, I don't like Tabasco. Okay. I'm sorry, Tabasco.
Wow. I just
I know, but it's Yeah, like Tapatío, Cholula, are great. Uh-huh. Um, Sriracha. Yes. That's what I grew up with. So, now I mean, it's Sriracha is everywhere. Yeah, I even put hot sauce on my pizza. Like it's bad.
Me too. Yes. That's You and I are vibing.
Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
And The Passion seems like a really appropriate project for you, too, because you haven't been shy about your faith and putting it out there. When you found out you would be part of this project, tell me what that was like and and how that lined up for you.
I just think it's an exciting way, um, to just really go outside of the church. Those those kinda, you know, the the the kinda confines that that kinda puts people in sometimes. And I just think it's really neat in this context to to put the story of Jesus in a modern day with your favorite pop songs helping to tell the story. I think it's really unique. And we get to hang with other Perry on this. And Perry and I get to sing with Chris Daughtry. Um, so it's pretty exciting.
Each fan. How has that been rehearsing and and
Yeah, super fun. Yeah, super fun. Yeah, I was a big fan I told him I was a big fan. Uh-huh. Um, um, at the end of the at the end of of hanging out, you know. Not not right at the beginning because I didn't want him to be freaked out. Because I literally voted for him.
Did you like take him aside? You did. In American Idol.
Yeah, I was I was genuinely like a lot. I I when he got voted off, I was absolutely devastated. I'm not gonna I'm not.
Did you tell him that?
I told him. Yeah, I told him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I told him once we knew each other a little bit better, so it wouldn't be like, oh, this fan girl. His voice is honestly like, it's unbelievable. I mean, yeah, hearing him sing and like live, like just like right is it's it's unreal. I mean, everyone's extremely talented. All the singing is live and it's it's pretty amazing.
You have an amazing voice. I don't want I don't want to put you on the spot but I kind of do. Um, do you wanna take us out on on a song, maybe one of your songs? One of my
One of one of your songs. Yeah. Oh my gosh. What did I know I was gonna have to sing. I didn't warm up. Oh good. Oh no. Oh no. It's just going so bad. The world is so broken and sometimes it leaves you cold. And at times you can't feel the fire to guide you home. Oh, the demons will haunt you and try to steal what you know. But the angels they brought you and they're gonna hold you up. They're gonna hold you up.
That was amazing. Thank you so much. I have a new shower song now.
I usually I usually sing with my guitar and stuff. Next time. Next time.
