How does performing "You Don't Own Me" feel unique to you?

I find it really hard to cover records. I write all of my stuff so when I cover like people's songs or try and sing songs that I haven't written it's always really weird for me but this is the only song I've ever been able to sing and it like feel natural and normal I think because the message and everything behind it is just so timeless and it's empowering I think that kind of gives you a little oomph when you sing it.

Yeah, you can feel it. You're in it.

Yeah, exactly.

The song is special because it has over 50 million plays on Spotify and you broke a record with the song along with your brother who's also an artist. You guys were the first Australian siblings to ever both be number one on the charts. That's pretty cool.

That was cool yeah it was super weird how that happened. We both like signed at the same time and then put out our first single at the same time and it just like it's crazy how it happened. We were literally like he was number one then I was We were like battling for the top for like a few weeks.

Are you guys competitive a bit or are you like artistically encouraging? How was your relationship?

We're not really competitive you know he's nearly ten years older than me so I'm his little little sister he looks out for me and when he wins I win and vice versa.

Well, you have another song, "Hell of a Girl" and I've seen the music video for this one. The ending is epic. I love it. Can you tell us a little bit about the plot of the music video and then the filming process of the music video as well?

I mean it's a breakup song but I wanted it to be not like a depressing angry breakup song. I think it was important for me to have it so that there was some kind of relief when you know you got to leave something and you're moving on to better things. So there was like a positive ending. And I think I wanted the video to be like a little movie. Basically the plot was I get cheated on in the first scene. I walk in on the dude that I'm seeing or dating or whatever and he's with another girl and I like storm out and do like this hair flip out the window out the corridor.

And all girls are like siding with you as they're watching it. cheering you on.

Yeah, he looks like the biggest jerk ever. I like ride off into the sunset with the new boo.

You come out on top. And I've read so many articles about your family being in music. Did that really encourage you to become an artist?

Absolutely yeah. My grandparents were singers and my mom was just one of those women that like anything artsy or creative she was good at. Like she was always painting and she used to write children's books and so doing something expressive and creative like that just felt like, oh this is normal. This is what everybody like around me is doing. So when I figured out I could sing, I just kind of ran with it.

So you've had a lot of opportunity to perform as far as the other artists that you admire. Is there one specific artist that you would totally love to collaborate with in the future?

Definitely. Yeah, I'm the biggest Lauren Hill fan like that was the first album I ever bought "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" and any chance I get to see her live or get to listen to her music or whatever I'm so inspired. So I would love love love love to do some with her.

And as far as inspiration in your field, do you have any artists that really have inspired you to get you to where you are today?

Yeah, absolutely. I grew up listening to like soul and Motown. So my nan was a jazz singer and she brought to me like Shirley Bassey and Etta James and my mom pushed me more in the soul direction with Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston and those big like epic powerful soul singers. And then that led me to artists like Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill and that's really where I found like this is what I love listening to this. What I wanna you know create something that makes people feel the way I feel when I listen to that.

How about so far in your career, what's been the coolest moment?

Honestly just being able to like work with Quincy has been really such a special moment and I feel so so lucky just to be around him and

He was a producer

Yes.

on the song, "You Don't Own Me", right?

So he did the original with Leslie in in 1963 and then when we came together to recreate this version, he partnered with Parker Gilly who is the other producer on it. Who I've been working with since I was 14 and he's like a brother to me. So they came together and Parker brought like the new freshness. Then Quincy made sure it was like solid and had all those classic elements of the original.

And I don't tell you what to say and I don't tell you what to do. So just let me be myself. That's all I ask of you. I'm young and I love to be young and I'm free and I love to be free to live my life the way I want to say and do whatever I please 'cause

How do you like being in LA and you know you're from Australia but is this home now or?

No actually, I live in Atlanta. So I live in the states but I don't live in LA. I love LA. I only come here for work though. So I need to come out here and like spend some time and chill and do some California stuff.

Like Young Hollywood take you on an LA tour.

Yes. Yes. I need to do all that.

Well, I'm sure you'll be traveling a ton for FMA. Do you have one specific place that you're like dying to travel to?

I mean, I've been there before but I would love to spend some time in Italy and Spain but I've been there but I that's the problem like you travel to these places but you don't ever get this double-edged sword don't ever get time to just go there and like explore and sightsee and do all you know what you would do if you're on holiday. So I need to go back to some places I've already been to and spend some time there.
