Inside the Magic World of the Black Rabbit Rose

What's up, guys, young Hollywood is taking you behind the magic of Black Rabbit Rose. So I'm telling everyone about the magic of this place, but you really have to be here to actually get it right.

Well, that's the beauty of magic in general. It's one of the last things that you really have to be in person to really appreciate. It doesn't convey quite the same on screen or anything digital. It's very personal art form, and this space is very personal. It's intimate, it's small. You actually connect with people here.

Yes. one on one, almost. Yes, it's very intimate. It's a hidden theater in Hollywood and all of the Houston Brothers' venues. There's always like a some kind of a fun entrance. And when people find themselves in here, it's very cozy and secret it away. Now you mentioned the Houston brothers. They are so well known for venues like this. Take me into their world a little bit because you've been here since the beginning.

I have this block. They already had no vacancy here, which is very popular right down the street. And then they found this beautiful space in an old apartment building. And this apartment building has been here since the 1910's. It was built by MGM for actors and actresses, and they want to make a speakeasy magic theater. They were inspired by Magic Golden Age.

So part of the magic at Black Rabbit Rose, not just the tricks going on on the stage now here at the bar as well.

Yeah, we make some magic up here. It's not just the show, it's the drinks, it's the tableside magic, it's the whole everything. All comes together really nicely to give you quite the experience here.

Well, I need to experience the idea right now. All right.

So one of our best sellers is called the bullet catch. This is a crowd pleaser out of all the cocktails that we have. That's one person season. Everybody else wants to get it.

It's funny how you say sees them nice, drinks them. It's all about the look visual cues, and I'm hooked already. It's a little magical tonic we have. I was like, Oh, are you ready for this? Yeah. Symbolic. That's a cocktail, that's a cocktail. Yup. It smells, smells like Christmas, smells like a Pottery Barn catalog of delicious. What? Very special. Yeah. So when a person walks through the doors, what can they expect when it comes up black, crowded roads?

We have a core cast who's been with us from the beginning and then we have a revolving cast of guests, performers, variety artists. So we have magicians, singers, fire eaters, sword swallowers, all sorts of variety comedy, amazing, amazing acts. And we also have live music late at night. We have beautiful live jazz and singing bands. Yeah, we have wonderful Thai restaurant adjoining called Crying Tiger that's won a lot of different awards. It's really just like home style Thai food, but really elegant and delicious.

And you've been here since the beginning. How did you find your way here?

Well, I was asked by a mutual friend named Rob Sabrekie to come jump on board, and I am actually a fourth generation magician from a family of magicians that's native to Los Angeles. My grandparents founded a club right up the street called the Magic Castle. This place is a smaller version of the Magic Castle, but it's different. It's got a different vibe, almost sexier. It's a different energy. It's more dark and mysterious. It's smaller. The Houston brothers is very open that they were very inspired by the Magic Castle. They call this their homage to the Magic Castle, but it is very different. I like to think of it as a sister venue, but it is a sister in that it's very feminine, mysterious, kind of a little darker.

All right, so one of our best sellers is going to be our honey bunny. So the cool thing about this is it's a very light and refreshing drink, but does a lot of components to it. They make it complex yet really well balanced. Toss some Mescal in there. Some fresh honeydew puree little sweetness, a little citrus just for fun, doing a little bit of habanero in there give it a nice, nice hot shot.

You do that well.

Many years of doing this, there is always a genuine taste magical. But we have a little surprise in store for you guys. There are surprises through these doors. A lot of surprises. Now, take a sip, go ahead and try it out. It's. That's a party that is a party. Yeah. The habanero really kicks in at the end. Oh, it's like dancing in the back. I'd like to keep it. Just when you think it's all done, the ride has a little spread at the end. Yeah, the magic, the magic, the magic continued.

What could people expect here? But then there are surprises at every turn.

I can't tell you that. And I think that you can expect that you're going to have a romantic evening. You're going to have shelter from the ordinary world and you're going to experience something that'll turn your mind inside out in some way or another.
