YH AT HOME with Kim Petras

Written by Katie Marzullo. Published: May 07 2020

Back in her native Germany, singer/songwriter Kim Petras knew what she had to do to make her pop star dreams come true. So, she worked as a waitress and saved all her money for a plane ticket to L.A. and a burning desire for success, and it was not long before it paid off!

The past few years in particular have been some of Kim’s busiest yet, and she is definitely not letting a little thing like a nationwide quarantine stop her (especially when she has her own home studio set-up)! Her upcoming single “Malibu” marks a return to her bubblegum pop roots that she’s known for, after a period of putting out somewhat darker material reflecting her state of mind after a breakup. Now more than ever, we need some fun and escapism in our lives, and that is what Kim intends with “Malibu”!

The singer hopped on Zoom with Young Hollywood to scoop us more on all the exciting projects she has coming up and told us that “Malibu” is a track she's most excited for, not the least of which due to her fans' participation in the making of the music video! After a call for submissions from her fans of clips of them bringing to beach to their isolation location, she was overwhelmed with the results and is currently sorting through them to edit into the final video!

Kim also teased some other projects she's working on to keep busy during quarantine, like an upcoming concept album. She explained that her previous albums felt like just a collection of songs but she is eager to work on something more thematically cohesive. She told us about some other ways in which she is keeping in touch with her fans while in isolation ('Animal Crossing', anyone?), and she offered advice for any of her fans who want to get on her level of success – spoiler: confidence is key, but so is having a quality product to back it up!
