WOMEN WE LOVE: Anne Hathaway

Written by Lori Bashian. Published: November 12 2019

Today is the one and only Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Rinaldi Princess of Genovia’s birthday, a day which should be celebrated by all. Anne Hathaway is turning 33 years old today and has a lot to celebrate. She recently welcomed her second child with husband Adam Shulman and has starred in countless hit films, giving us plenty of iconic quotable movies.

The 2001 Disney hit The Princess Diaries, directed by Garry Marshall, was Hathaway’s breakthrough performance. Starring alongside Dame Julie Andrews, Hathaway played a not-so-popular teenager who finds out she’s actually the princess of Genovia and sole heir to the throne. Totally relatable. The sequel to the movie was released in 2004 and was an instant hit with fans and remains a cult classic.

She spent the next few years of her career starring in a string of family-oriented films, such as Ella Enchanted, but transitioned into more adult roles in 2005. Her most notable films from this time period are Brokeback Mountain and The Devil Wears Prada

In Brokeback Mountain, she portrayed Jake Gyllenhaal’s character’s wife, and in The Devil Wears Prada, she played a young journalist who loses herself in the world of Runway Magazine working as an assistant to a difficult editor-in-chief (Meryl Streep). She credits these roles for making her realize that she wanted to act in movies which would spark something in her audience rather than films made purely to entertain. The Devil Wears Prada is also Hathaway’s highest-grossing film at the box office to this point.

Up next was her Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated role as Kym in Rachel Getting Married, a young woman who returns home for her sister’s wedding fresh off a stint at a drug rehabilitation center.

She then went on to star in more Disney movies, such as Alice in Wonderland, and romantic comedies such as Bride Wars alongside Kate Hudson, Valentine’s Day alongside every other actor in Hollywood, and Love and Other Drugs, for which she earned another Golden Globe nomination.

In 2012, Hathaway put on the iconic jumpsuit and portrayed Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan’s final instalment in The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises.

Her biggest role of this time period was as Fantine in Les Miserables. For this role, Hathaway lost 25 pounds by restricting herself to a diet of fewer than 500 calories a day, and in the film itself, Hathaway sings a haunting rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" live in one excruciatingly long close-up, which would give anyone who listens goosebumps. For her performance in Les Mis, Hathaway won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.

In 2014, she also starred in the epic sci-fi drama Interstellar alongside Jessica Chastain and Matthew McConaughey. The film is about a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole to find a potential new home for mankind.

Anne Hathaway’s only acting gig in 2015 was The Intern, in which she starred with Robert DeNiro. It was not well received by critics, but I personally loved the movie. Since then, she has starred in Alice Through the Looking Glass, Ocean's 8 with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, the thriller Serenity, and the comedy The Hustle.

She has a number of upcoming projects in 2020, including a drama opposite Mark Ruffalo titled Dark Waters. In May of this year, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Anna Hathaway has proven time and again that she can do it all. Drama? Fantasy? Comedy? Musicals? Action? Whatever you got, Anne can (and does) deliver, and that's why she will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come!
