Netflix boasts a huge catalogue of material to watch, and the international section keeps getting bigger all the time. One of their recent additions is “The Hockey Girls” (“Les De L’Hoquei” in Spanish), a drama series about a girls roller hockey team’s fight for success.

Netflix’s official logline: "The passionate members of a girls roller hockey team chase down victories in the rink while striving to make time for school, family, and romance."

The show is a drama about these teenagers working to succeed in a system built against them. The club they all play for wants to get rid of the women’s team, so they protest to stay and are told they have to prove their skill in order to remain in the club. In just the first episode, the show tackles the issue of sexism in sports and sets it up to be a main theme for the rest of the season.

“The Hockey Girls” is a great coming-of-age drama about a very timely issue. It relates a lot to the conversation going on in the U.S. about women’s soccer and the difference in pay between them and their male counterparts.

Alongside that, all the young actors are amazing, and their characters go through normal teenage issues, like relationship problems and resentment against siblings. The show also takes advantage of the adult characters, giving them their own storylines outside of their children and roller hockey.

Watch “The Hockey Girls” if you like shows like “Friday Night Lights”, “Make it or Break it”, or “All American”! Season 1 is streaming now on Netflix!
