This Is Heavy: 'Back To The Future' Musical Is Officially a Go!
The future is finally here, Doc.
After its initial announcement 6 years ago, a musical adaptation of the popular ‘80s comedy Back to the Future is finally set to premiere in Manchester, England, in 2020.
In this time-tripping show, British actor Olly Dobson will navigate the dimensions of the universe as beloved teen Marty McFly. Dobson previously was cast in the West End productions Bat Out of Hell and Matilda. Other character castings, including the goofy scientist Dr. Emmett Brown, have yet to be announced.
Directing the musical is Tony winner John Rando and co-writer Bob Gale. Original Back to the Future composer Alan Silvestri will be working in unison with Glen Ballard to compose the score, and Chris Bailey is the choreographer. Classic tunes such as Chuck Berry's “Johnny B. Goode” and Huey Lewis & The News's “The Power of Love” will be featured in the show. A place for the original directer of the 1985 film, Robert Zemeckis, was even found as a producer.
The musical I set to premiere at the Manchester Opera House in the U.K. on February 20, 2020. It is scheduled to play through May 17, followed by a London engagement at a West End venue to be announced. While no Broadway plans have been announced, it seems certain that producers will step in this direction due to the vast popularity and success of the film. We can only hope that the show will soon hit the U.S. after its U.K. premiere!
