"Stranger Things 3" Breakout Star Maya Hawke Also Making Waves With Her Music!

Maya Hawke is really having the breakout year every up-and-coming entertainer would want to have. First, she stole the show in season 3 of "Stranger Things", then she made a brief but memorable appearance in the summer’s biggest film, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and now she’s releasing music!

Hawke has released two songs, titled “To Love a Boy” and “Stay Open”, which are beautiful and show off Maya’s soft, soothing, and swoon-worthy vocals. Maya co-wrote both songs with Jesse Harris, a songwriter who has worked with Lana Del Rey and Norah Jones in the past.

The lyrics for “To Love a Boy” speak about a girl’s hope of finding a boy she can love, who will in turn love her, and her inner insecurities which she fears could make that impossible. “To Love a Boy” is accompanied by a goofy music video in which Hawke portrays a mermaid who has washed up onto the shore. Throughout the video, the mermaid explores all things human with childlike wonder but in the end goes back to the ocean. The video is playful and has the look of a home video which was shot on a camcorder, which actually makes the video more endearing and feels as if it is true to who Maya is. When she isn’t featured as a mermaid, Hawke is seen singing in front of a black backdrop.

Fans  have yet to be graced with a music video for the other song, “Stay Open”, but it is just as beautiful. It has the same slow feel and tells the love story between a man and a woman. The lyrics suggest, however, that, in this relationship, the woman has more feelings than the man.

People have compared the styles of these songs to a forgotten styles of the singers of the '70s, and the melody of the song and the tone in which Maya sings “To Love a Boy” reminds me of Audrey Hepburn’s performance of “Moon River” in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
