J.Lo's 'On the 6': 20 Years Later!

Written by Kevin Norman. Published: June 10 2019

Jennifer Lopez, or better known as J.Lo, is a triple threat that no one saw coming. She started as a dancer, then an actress, and then released her debut album On The 6, which people thought to be a joke. How could this woman dominate 3 different fields of entertainment? Well, she did, and she does, and I swear she never ages. She looks as fantastic today as she did then, and she can dance better than I ever could. It’s been 20 years since the release of her debut album, and none of us will ever forget the hits “No Me Ames”, “If You Had My Love”, and “Waiting For Tonight”.

Before the release of her album, J.Lo was known for her movies. Her breakout role was as the singer Selena in a biopic of the same name in 1996, and it was this role that reignited her passion for music. According to Lopez, “Music has always been a part of me since I was very young. That they got to know me first as an actress was a coincidence because I was always gonna do both.” And let’s say she does both exceptionally well.

Lopez said that, with movies, she always played different characters with different stories, but when it came to her music, it was always her and her story. She claims that her music is who she really is. The album's title references the 6 subway line in New York City to pay homage to the train she always took between Manhattan and her hometown of the Bronx.

Lopez also breaks significant barriers with her music. She brought Latin pop music to the top of the charts and made it mainstream in the U.S. She blends pop, Latin, and R&B seamlessly. Her second single from the album, “No Me Ames”, was sung entirely in Spanish.

J.Lo shows no signs of slowing down. Since On The 6, she has a total of 8 studio albums, starred in over 2 dozen films, and created both a fashion and makeup line, a production company, and a charitable foundation. Her newest single, "Medicine" (feat. French Montana), is J.Lo at her classic best. And now, about to turn 50, she just kicked off her first concert tour in almost 7 years this past weekend. Jenny From The Block is back, but honestly, was she ever really gone?
