Written by Julia Hutchens. Published: June 09 2019

Gather 'round, fantasy nerds, and hearken to our tale: An animated series based on the influential fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering is coming to Netflix!

After producing 4 Marvel Studios hits in 5 years, Joe and Anthony Russo are turning to a new direction. The iconic duo have teamed with Netflix, Wizards of the Coast, and Hasbro’s Allspark Animation to bring Magic: The Gathering to life.

Magic: The Gathering was created by Richard Garfield and was released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast as the first-ever trading card game. Players are cast as wizards known as planewalkers who travel through Magic’s infinite realm to battle other wizards by casting spells, summoning creatures, and utilizing artifacts.

What makes the upcoming series so exciting is that the fantasy game has never been portrayed on film before. The Russo Brothers have shared that they have been avid fans and players of the game for as long as they can remember, so the series is a true passion project for them.

The series is in its beginning stages; it doesn’t even have a title yet! Because Magic:The Gathering has never been portrayed on film, the Russo brothers will have a lot of creative say when they manage the modeling of an all new storyline.

The brothers’ goal is to transcend the perception of storytelling through animation by creating deeply developed characters, which are not often depicted in animation. Through these characters, the Russos will create a suspenseful thriller that is packed with horror and drama.

Netflix has yet to announce an episode count or a release date, so stay tuned!
