ICYMI: 'Crazy Rich Asians' Sequel - 2 Crazy 2 Rich?!

Written by Kevin Donaldson. Published: August 25 2018

To get a few things out of the way, yes, a sequel to what is probably the rom-com of the year, Crazy Rich Asians, is in the works. The cast and writing team is expected to return along with director Jon M. Chu. The whole thing could lead to a trilogy, as the first film is based on a book that is part of a trilogy from author Kevin Kwan. And finally, the title of this article is not the title of the sequel (but fingers crossed since the old men next to me in the theater before The Spy Who Dumped Me were really angered by the original film’s title).

Unfortunately, I have not seen Crazy Rich Asians yet nor have I read the book. (My girlfriend read and loved the book and had no idea there were two sequels until I told her.) The next book is entitled China Rich Girlfriend but it is unknown at this time if the movie will share the same title. It’s also unknown at this time if the sequel or sequels will be greenlit, but given how much of a success this first film has been with critics and audiences, it's safe to say it probably will.

According to producer Brad Simpson, it's also been the plan from the start, as he has been quoted as saying, “We have a plan with Kevin (Kwan) for the next two films.” Those plans might be jeapordized, however, since Kwan is facing possible jail time for draft dodging in his native Singapore, so things might take a while to become finalized. Chu, the director wanted for the job, is also set to direct a film adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda’s first musical In The Heights, which is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. on June 26, 2020. But as I’m sure you’ve already guessed, Crazy Rich Asians 2: Crazier Richer Asians doesn’t have a released date.
