HIDDEN ON STREAMING: '20th Century Women'

Written by Pauline Woodley. Published: October 23 2019

2016 was an amazing year for film. Award-winning filmsMoonlight and La La Land deservedly took over the film conversation, but those weren’t the only movies worth watching that came out that year. One of my favorite films of 2016 was Mike Mill’s autobiographical 20th Century Women, available to stream now on Netflix.

20th Century Women follows a young boy, Jamie, who is being raised by the three women in his life: his single mother Dorothea, his best friend Julie, and an older sister figure Abbie. Starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, and Lucas Jade Zumann, 20th Century Women is filled with a star-studded cast that captivates the screen.

Each woman was born at a different time throughout the 20th century and they represent very specific generations. These generational gaps translate to some major themes in the movie and make for interesting dynamics between all of the main characters.

The movie takes place in Santa Barbara during the year 1979 and its filled to the brim with nostalgia and late-'70s references. In the movie, Jamie plays a dangerous game with his friends that lands him in the emergency room. After the game, Dorothea realizes that she can’t raise Jamie alone anymore and asks Julie and Abbie to help her out. Dorothea wants the girls to share their life with him to help him grow up and become the man he’s supposed to be.

The editing and imagery in the movie is especially unique. The storyline isn’t linear, and the movie often uses flashbacks to explain why these characters are the way they are. The viewing experience is comparable to looking through an old family scrapbook and telling the stories from the photographs. These memories that Jamie shares with us have shaped his teenhood.

When preparing to watch 20th Century Women, get ready for insightful lessons, beautiful relationships, and raw conversations about womanhood, sex, and happiness. Check out20th Century Women on Netflix if you love other family-driven movies like Lady Bird, The Kids Are Alright, and While We’re Young
