If someone can embody the spirit of the character, that is all that matters. Ariel was more than pale skin and red hair. She was a girl who was determined to risk everything for love and fought against the rules that were set to stop her from exploring herself and the world. The best person who can do that, whether they are white/black/ginger/blonde/purple, is the one who should play the part.
