Hannah Marks's 'Banana Split' Rewrites The Rules on Female Friendships!

Written by Sarrah Wolfe. Published: March 18 2020

Hannah Marks has been pushing hard against the boundaries of what young women are capable of in the entertainment industry.

If you’re not already familiar with her, she’s known for her role as Amanda in the TV series "Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency" and the director of After Everything which premiered at SXSW film fest in 2018. She was named one of Rolling Stones’s “25 Under 25 Artists Changing the World”, and last year it was announced that she would be directing the film adaptation of John Green’s Turtles All The Way Down.

So yeah, she’s super amazing and a HUGE inspiration for women everywhere. Now, as a writer and lead actress on her newest film, Banana Split, Marks continues to push boundaries and write her own set of rules.

The film follows Clara (Liana Liberato) and April (Marks) as they develop a deep friendship despite the fact that Clara is dating April’s ex-boyfriend, Nick (Dylan Sprouse). What would normally be a source of bitter competition between women becomes a common ground for them to develop a rare and meaningful friendship that everyone longs for.

Banana Split does away with the all-too-common crazy ex-girlfriend trope that I think all women are getting a little tired of. I mean, how many more chick flicks do we need that depict women as crazy and irrationally emotional?

Marks knows how toxic that narrative is and uses Banana Split to rewrite the rules. The film really makes you wonder what great connections and friendships you could be missing out on because of some unnecessary hostility towards an ex.

The film originally premiered in 2018 at the L.A. Film Festival but finally comes out in wide release on March 27. See it if you can -- It will change everything you know about the rules of rom-coms!
