Hailee Steinfeld Goes Naked -- Emotionally and Literally -- In New Video For “Wrong Direction”!

Written by Nicole Koch. Published: January 09 2020

WOW.

Is there anything Hailee Steinfeld can’t do?

I have always been such a big fan of her music -- her incredibly raaawwww voice, catchy melodies, and overall vibe are the key ingredients that make the most incredible songs. In my opinion, Hailee has done an excellent job at showing the world she can make a hit, one that gets people up and dancing in the streets. However, only 8 days into 2020, she shows us another side of her.

Hailee recently dropped her video for new single, “Wrong Direction”, and I’m awestruck. For what feels like the first time in her music career, we see Hailee bare all. We’re so proud!

Water is so healing, and it seems as though she’s washing herself clean of the past and her last romantic relationship. Watch!

Can you hear me screaming?! It’s. So. Good.

If you were too lazy to watch or just can’t right now (make time for it later!), here’s what happens: you see her sulk in a bathtub, and she sings the most heartbreaking and relatable lyrics. The camera keeps a close focus on her terribly sad eyes and all you want to do is make her feel better. But then you lowkey struggle with that because you don’t want it to stop, because the lyrics are so angelic and gorgeous all around.

Don’t get me wrong, all of her other music videos are amazing, but this one is ART. It’s so simple, so beautiful, and so real. (The video is actually very reminiscent of Sinead O'Connor's iconic clip for "Nothing Compares 2U", which uses a similar method of staying on her face the whole time as she cycles through the emotions of the song.)

I’m so smitten with the lyrics (if you couldn’t tell!), so let’s break them down further, shall we?

I don't hate you

No, I couldn't if I wanted to

I just hate all the hurtthatyou put methrough

And that I blame myself forletting you

Did you know I already knew?

Phew, we’ve all been there. When you love someone so much, you couldn’t ever possibly hate them, no matter what they’ve done. And my heart breaks when says she blames herself. Again, we’ve all been there. I hope Hailee has found forgiveness for herself and the person she sings to.

Couldn't even see you through the smoke

Lookin' back, I probably should have known

But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin' alone

I just got chills reading these as I write this. Smoke and mirrors. They’re a real b**ch, aren’t they? Sometimes when we’re so in love with someone, we don’t see all of them. Their flaws go into our blind spots, and we only see what we want to see.

Loved me with your worst intentions

Didn't even stop to question

Every time you burned me down

Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven

Loved me with your worst intentions

Painted us a happy ending

Every time you burned me down

Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven

Ooh when she sings "for a moment it felt like heaven", I want to cry with her! We’ve all been on that emotional rollercoaster, the addicting highs and lows, the moments where we never knew we could possibly feel so much. Sometimes when you love someone that much, you’d walk through the fire to get to them. Damn.

On my tip-toes

But I still couldn't reach your ego

Guess I was crazy to give you my body, my mind

Don't know what I was thinkin' 'til now

Everyone thinks that you're somebody else

You even convinced yourself

This is my favorite part of the song. I’m only 5 ft tall, so when she sings about tip-toes, I feel that. And her word choice with "ego" is so chilling. She’s acknowledging that the person she sings this to was in their ego space, and we all know that when people are TOO much in their ego, mostly hurtful things come from that. She regrets giving this person ALL of her, because they weren’t who she hoped they were. I hope she finds peace in knowing she’ll be with someone who deserves her someday!

How did you sweep me right off my feet?

Baby, I can't keep

Fallin' in the wrong direction

How did you sweep me right off my feet?

Right off my feet

Have you ever been in a love, where even with all the pain, you seemed to keep getting all wrapped up in it? The pain, the drama, the hope, etc. Eventually it can turn into a dream world. Being swept off your feet.

And then the pre-chorus and chorus continue once more.

Ugh, excuse me while I go listen to this on repeat!
