Olivia Rodrigo just gave fans another taste off of her upcoming sophomore album Guts, and it was absolutely delicious! Rodrigo dropped her new song, “Bad Idea Right?” on August 11, and we have been obsessed ever since. From the insane arrangement of harmonies to the fun and relatable lyrics and the heavy bass, “Bad Idea Right?” is not just a hit but also another amazing song by Rodrigo that has us buzzing with anticipation for her new album! So without further ado, we've broken down the song, her music video, and everything else you need to know about "Bad Idea Right?". Check it out!
“Bad Idea Right?” was entirely written by Olivia Rodrigo and Daniel Nigro, who also produced the song and was the last producer and co-writer on her previous single, "Vampire". He also worked with Rodrigo on her first album, Sour, which won him a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. Rodrigo wrote in an Instagram post that she and Nigro wrote the chorus last year while in New York City. She revealed that the chorus started out as a joke but that they loved it so much that they turned it into a song! We guess some things are just meant to be!
“Bad Idea Right?” includes lyrics that are just all too familiar to anyone with an ex you’ve reconnected with. Rodrigo sings, “Yes, I know that he's my ex / But can't two people reconnect? / 'I only see him as a friend' / The biggest lie I ever said...” If you’ve ever had moments or "bad ideas" like these, this is the song for you! Rodrigo continues on, singing that she knows this is a bad idea but that she just can’t hear her own thoughts. Don’t worry, girl, we’ve all been there! The bass in this song is heavy, with a perfect addition of drums and synth. There’s also wicked guitar solo towards the end of the song that totally brings the whole thing together. Needless to say, this is our new anthem anytime we have one of our own bad ideas!
Rodrigo also released the music video for “Bad Idea Right?”, which shows her at a party with all her friends -- played my Tate McRae, Iris Apatow, and Olivia's old "Bizaardvark" co-star Madison Hu -- who are all telling her that seeing her ex is a bad idea. We love supportive besties! Olivia is also seen crowd-surfing and singing directly at the camera before she’s dropped to the floor when the music stops. Ouch! The video continues on, showing Rodrigo sneaking in the back of a pick-up truck, on a bus, and walking, all in the middle of the pouring rain! As she finally gets to his apartment, Olivia lays in bed with a glowing figure that eventually bursts into fireworks and leaves a fire-y outline on the bed -- putting a literal spin on the phrase "old flame"! Directed by Petra Collins, this music video was fun, creative, and extremely visually appealing. We absolutely loved watching it while listening to our new favorite song!
“Bad Idea Right?” is definitely a song we won’t be forgetting about anytime soon, and one that we will have on repeat until the rest of Guts drops September 8th. “Bad Idea Right?” is now available on all music streaming platforms. Happy listening!
