One week from today (November 12, to be exact), Apple TV+ will be releasing “The Shrink Next Door”, a limited series based on the podcast of the same name based on the crazy true story of psychiatrist Dr. Isaac Herschkopf and how he systematically ruined the life of one of his patients, Martin Markowitz.

On the surface, it looks like a buddy comedy, as it stars Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell, as well as Kathryn Hahn and Casey Wilson. But the subject is no laughing matter! All of these actors have flirted with more dramatic roles in the past, but this series might be the thing that really pushing them into Serious Actor™ territory, and we can’t wait!

The series, like the podcast, tells the story of a psychiatrist Dr. Herschkopf (Rudd) who manipulates his long-time client Markowitz (Ferrell) to the point where the latter loses everything – to the former’s gain. The podcast (written and hosted by Joe Nocera) won a 2020 Webby Award and was number 1 on Apple’s podcast charts for a number of weeks, so perhaps a TV adaptation was inevitable. However, most true crime podcasts get the documentary treatment, but Apple TV+ is going all out on a dramatized version, starring some of the biggest names in comedy no less!

The series is being touted as a “comedy-drama”, but judging by the trailer, it’ll be heavy on the “drama” part. Who could possibly be tasked with bridging these two widely differing vibes? Well, that’s been assigned to writer Georgia Pritchett, who is the owner of a total of 4 Emmy Awards for her work on both “Succession” and “Veep”. So, yeah, this series is in very good hands!

The first 3 episodes drop next Friday (11/12), with subsequent eps (8 total) being released every week, so be sure to tune in to find out how this all shakes out! (Or just listen to the podcast and spoil yourselves, whatevs!)
