Listeners may have been introduced to the indie rock sensation, Dominic Fike, through a number of different ways. Some may know the Florida-native through his internet-breaking performance as the romantic interest, Elliot, on HBO’s hit-show "Euphoria", or his close friendship and involvement with the genre-spanning boyband BROCKHAMPTON, but most know Fike from his 2018 summer hit “3 Nights”

In the Summer of 2018, Fike’s guitar-laced track “3 Nights” captured the ears and hearts of listeners, leading to the formation of a large fanbase entranced by the 27-year-old’s whimsical vocal range and intricate guitarwork. With a long hiatus after his first solo album, What Could Possibly Go Wrong, Fike has returned in 2023 with a new Summer smash with deeper lyrics and a plethora of pitch-perfect production. After a highly-anticipated release and a live debut of the track during the first weekend of this year's Coachella, let’s break down “Dancing in the Courthouse”!

“Dancing in the Courthouse” opens with Fike’s signature sunny guitar chords as the singer muses about the passage of time during the Summer and the tiring thought process that follows the sun-bleached season. “Weather controls your day, people make up your mind, until you can’t even tell when someone gives you a sign,” Fike croons. As the chords raise higher and higher, the singer begins to focus on uplifting the listener, stating, “We make the ground our grave by layin’ in it / We make our problems fade by facin’ em…” This section builds to the grand entrance of the chorus, filled with soaring background vocals and the introduction of a steady but pounding drum beat. Through this chorus, Fike continues to blend themes of monotony with positivity as the chorus’s lyrics rise through the fray: “Make ‘em dance for it in the courthouse / Make a stand for it or it don’t count / Be the landlord of the whole town…” The track continues by introducing themes of perseverance and the idea of home in its second verse. Fike sings, “Hell or high water, we cover for you like camouflage…Until I feel a change in my day-to-day on a daily basis…” These lyrics and the repeated themes in the music video reflect Fike’s close ties with his home of Naples, Florida, and how Summer is faced by both the innocence of its youth and how returning home can bring that out of a person, no matter how old.

Throughout the track, Fike’s unique production shines with its inclusion of synthesizers, sparkling piano lines, thundering percussion, strumming electric guitar, and Fike’s signature backing vocals. With each new section of “Dancing in the Courthouse”, listeners are invited into a new space, sporting fresh new lyrics from the indie singer that touch on a different aspect of the Summer season and the idea of coming home. One stand-out portion of the single lies in Fike’s holding of the note as he sings, “Put ‘em on edge…” Fike holds out this first line as the backing band picks up the swinging chorus with an infectious sliding effect that lands perfectly.

With such an upbeat subject matter, “Dancing in the Courthouse” also signifies a large change for the indie-rock artist. This new single sees Fike choosing to sparkle in the Summer sun, departing from his brooding acceptance found in his 2018 single “3 Nights”, a song that is filled with lyrics about a fading Summer romance. Will this fresh positivity translate to a new album with a different take on the Summer season? Fans of the soaring singer will have to just wait and see.
