10 Celebrities and Their (Surprising?) College Majors!

With Summer coming to a close and the school year on the horizon, college students everywhere will soon find themselves entrenched in the throes of their specialized studies. But if you feel a sense of uncertainty surrounding your major, have no fear! These 10 actors, comedians, and musicians defied the idea that your major must correspond with your eventual vocation and proved that education is still an investment worth making -- no matter how unexpected your major may be!

1. Lisa Kudrow: Psychobiology

Emmy Award-winning star of "Friends", Lisa Kudrow, graduated from New York State's Vassar College with a degree in Psychobiology, the study of behavioral neuroscience.

2. Steve Carell: History

A thespian of both comedy and drama, Steve Carell earned a degree in History at Denison University, graduating in 1984. 

3. Cate Blanchett: Economics

While studying at the University of Melbourne, Austalian-born 2-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett studied Economics and Fine Arts. 

4. Wanda Sykes: Marketing

Before comedian and actress Wanda Sykes shot to fame in Hollywood, she attended Hampton University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. 

5. Harrison Ford: Philosophy 

At Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin, Star Wars and Indiana Jones leading man, Harrison Ford, majored in Philosophy. He would go on to take part in an acting class during his senior year -- and the rest is history.

6. Natalie Portman: Psychology

Following success in films such as Léon: The Professional and Star Wars: Episode I, Natalie Portman made an unexpected choice by prioritizing her education over Hollywood, graduating with a degree in Psychology at Harvard University. 

7. Glenn Close: Anthropology

8-time Oscar nominee, Glenn Close, attended The College of William & Mary located in Williamsburg, Virginia, double-majoring in Anthropology, the scientific study of humanity, as well as Theater, of course. 

8. Cole Sprouse: Archeology

At NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, "Riverdale" star Cole Sprouse focused his studies on Archeology, graduating with his brother and "Suite Life" co-star, Dylan, in 2015. 

9. Dakota Fanning: Women’s Studies

Like Cole Sprouse, film and television star Dakota Fanning attended New York University’s Gallatin School and majored in Women’s Studies, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2014. 

10. Carrie Underwood: Mass Communications

A year after Carrie Underwood reigned as the "American Idol" champion in 2007, she completed her degree in Mass Communications with a Journalism emphasis at Northeastern University.
