5 Sunday Self-Care Ideas!

Written by Kate Anne Trott. Published: August 13 2023

Sundays are the best and worst day of the week. Most of us are off school or work and enjoying a lazy day relaxing at home with relatively nothing to do. The worst part of Sunday is knowing that Monday is closing in fast and all of our normal activities will resume.

The best thing you can do on a Sunday is care for your health, both mental and physical. “Self-Care Sundays” are the way to prepare for the long week ahead by prioritizing yourself and putting your needs first. Here are the best Sunday self-care ideas!

1. Doing Your Nails

If you love to get your nails done, by all means, use a lazy Sunday to go get your nails done professionally. For most of us, the daunting $70 price tag that comes with going to a nail salon is enough to steer clear of doing your nails all together. However, doing your own nails is both cheap and a fun and relaxing way to spend your day off. Amazon has amazing kits to help you get started, including kits for nail care upkeep and maintenance as well as kits for gel manicures. If you want to shoot your shot and attempt to do acrylic nails, they have you covered as well. Do not expect to be perfect at it if you are just starting out. It can even be frustrating at first to attempt to do it by yourself. If you are a beginner, I suggest inviting a friend to do it with you so you can help each other out. However, practice makes perfect, and the more times you do it the better you will get.

2. Hair Care

Everyone dreams of having luxurious hair, long or short. The best way to achieve your goals to keep your hair flawless is to take care of it with products that will keep it healthy and silky smooth. There are hundreds of products out there, and it could be difficult to find one that best fits your hair type. The most important thing you should do before finding the products that match your hair is to learn your hair type. From “1a” being pin straight to “4c” being tight curls, knowing your hair type will help you find the products that will work best for you. It’s also important to find out whether your hair is more oily or dry as well. Once you find out your hair type and your desired result, a quick Google search will pull up all the best products that will help you manage your hair and keep it as healthy as possible. In addition to shampoos and conditioners, there are supplements, hair masks, and mists and sprays that you can add to your hair care to keep you looking and feeling your best.

3. “Everything Showers”

A term coined by TikTok users, "Everything Showers" refers to any type of long shower routine to keep you occupied and relaxed. From shaving to hair care to even shower steamers, "everything showers" are one of the best ways to enjoy your Sunday in a way that normal showers just can’t do. (Just be careful not to skyrocket your water bill!) Start off by lighting your best candle to set the self-care mood right. Feel free to do anything from your hair care routine from up above such as oils or sprays. Next, you can start on your skincare routine. Getting a good skincare routine down is vital to an "everything shower". Make sure you remove all of your makeup and get your face nice and clear for the rest of your routine. Turn on the water and throw in a shower steamer. You can use essential oil shower steamers to get relaxed. Next, feel free to exfoliate, especially if you are going to shave. Use your regular shower cleaning routine. Once you are out of the water, make sure to hydrate your skin with lotions and oils and finish off your skincare. There's truly no way to do an "everything shower" the wrong way. Just make sure that, whatever your routine is, you relax, take your time, and make sure you’re using healthy products.

4. Journaling

Trying to take care of your mental health is often more difficult than taking care of your physical health. If you feel tense inside, relieving that tension can be one of the best ways to keep up with your self-care. Writing or journaling can be one of the best ways to feel at ease. Start with a notebook dedicated to your journaling sessions. Although it sounds childish, getting the right writing utensils can be vital to this process. Fun colors, pencils, markers, or pens can make the process feel organized, which can help set your mind at ease. Date your entry in your journal and start by just writing down everything that you feel at the moment. You can list things out with bullet points like with your emotions or activities of the week. You can also just put your pen to the paper and write everything that comes to mind. Like everything else on this list, there’s really no wrong way to do anything that is related to your own healthy self-care. If you need ideas or prompts, you can always find inspiration online or social media. If you have a therapist, asking them for ideas that will be specific to you is a perfect way to start. If not, there are lots of content creators that discuss the way that they journal or strategies to help you get started. If beginning a journal on your own is something that seems daunting, you can always find journals that are dedicated to mental health and stress relief. Many of these journals are easy to get and do not cost a lot. Most stores like Walmart, Target, or Walgreens/CVS will have journals dedicated to mental health. If you are having trouble finding one, you can always go to Amazon.

5. Video Games

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t fit with the rest of this list, Video games are also a great stress reliever. Sitting down in front of your PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, or any platform you have and playing your favorite games can work wonders at relieving tension. Make sure to take plenty of breaks, though, because staring at screens for too long can cause tension headaches. If you tend to lose track of time easily, investing in some blue light glasses can help keep your risk of headaches lower. If you’re someone who enjoys social interaction, many video games have multiplayer options so you can play with someone who’s in the same room or play online with someone from anywhere in the world. Just make sure if you’re playing online with strangers to be safe and never give out personal information. There are games out there for everyone, so if you’re not big into video games or are looking to get into it, do your research and find a game that resonates with you and would be enjoyable to play. There are war/shooter games, sports games, puzzle games, adventure games, or games in the Nintendo world that are perfect for people just starting out.

Happy Sunday!
