On Monday, November 23, fans all across the world were provided with a glimpse into the life of Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes in his Netflix documentary Shawn Mendes: In Wonder. Throughout the documentary, viewers followed Mendes on his journey to fame from his short singing videos on Vine to selling out stadiums worldwide.

To keep with the theme on wonder, we decided to answer some questions about Mendes that you have been wondering about!

1. Mendes Keeps A Manifest Journal

Have you ever heard that if you write your goals down that there is a higher chance of achieving them? Well, Mendes is a firm believer of manifesting his aspirations and dreams and does that with a manifest journal. In the documentary, Mendes shows a journal entry written by his younger self where he wrote “I control my brain with my voice. I sing with no tension. My chest voice is strong and healthy.” With Mendes’s success, it is not hard to see that his manifest journal has worked to his advantage!

2. Mendes Has A Close Relationship With His Sister

While Shawn is usually the center of conversation, many forget he has a younger sister named Aaliyah. In the documentary, Shawn picks up his sister from her first day of school and the two go to a soccer field where they lay down in the grass like they did when they were kids. Fun fact: Aaliyah recalls her brother's singing to be “so annoying” in the beginning because there was constant noise at their house. Can you believe that?!

3. His Pre-Show Ritual Is To Kiss His Guitar Pick

Before each show, Mendes kisses his guitar pick and whispers a mantra to himself. Some of his most common mantras include: “We do it because we love it” and “We do it because we love music.” The nerves and adrenaline he feels before each show compares to what he feels is the equivalent of the seconds before going skydiving.

4. Mendes Doesn’t Use The Bathroom During A Performance

Have you ever wondered if your favorite singers use the bathroom during a show? According to the documentary, the short answer is "no." Mendes said he does not use the bathroom during a show. However, if he’s quick enough as he’s running from the back of Stage A to Stage B, he can pee in the dressing room and run back out. Don’t worry, Mendes says he always washes his hands!

5. His Childhood Friend Joins Him On The Road

In order to stay humble and have a piece of home away from home, Mendes brings his best friend Brian Craigen on the road with him. Mendes credits Craigen for helping him stay grounded while living his extraordinary life by keeping him close with hometown friends. Isn’t that sweet?!
