There’s something for everyone, whether you're into sci-fi or fantasy or classic contemporary fiction. Here are some of our faves!
1. "Extraordinary Attorney Woo"
If you love the series "The Good Doctor", you will love "Extraordinary Attorney Woo". It is the story of a young woman with autism navigating through life and her new job as a lawyer. Woo Young-woo must solve her cases and understand new social situations, all while dealing with the general societal ignorance of autism. The series is heartwarming, and for those of us on the spectrum, it is very relatable. The series is a mix of comedy, romance, and legal drama. It makes for an unforgettable series and it is very rewatchable if you haven’t watched it in a while.
2. "Alchemy of Souls"
If fantasy is more your style, Alchemy of Souls might be the series for you. An assassin is magically transferred into the body of a weak young woman and becomes the servant to a young nobleman. The two traverse a world of politics, love, and forbidden magic. The series is complex and well thought-out with beautiful scenery. It is hard to find a good fantasy with a complex love story and as much world-building as this series has.
3. "Mystic Pop-up Bar"
If "Alchemy of Souls" isn’t magical enough for you, give "Mystic Pop-Up Bar" a try. A woman runs a magical bar that appears in people’s dreams where she and the rest of her crew work to help people solve their problems. She discovers a young man who she calls a magnet and uses his unique abilities to help as many people as possible. The series is heartwarming and filled with magic. After watching the series, you will definitely walk away feeling good.
4. "Move to Heaven"
"Move to Heaven" is another story with a character who has autism as the lead. It follows a young man after his father passes, forcing his ex-con uncle to become responsible for him. Together, they take over his father’s business. The catch is that his father did clean-up after traumas. The uncle and nephew work with the families through their grief all while learning how to be together. This is an emotionally-charged series, filled with thoughts of life and how it all eventually ends, but also a very enjoyable watch.
5. "Little Women"
A group of sisters who live in poverty suddenly stumble upon a large sum of money. The sisters all have different ideas on what to do with the money. However, as they go deeper into where the money came from, they realize that their world is far more dangerous than they had realized. They must keep each other safe and fight against the villains who want the money that they now control. Don’t be fooled, the story has nothing to do with the classic novel Little Women -- This is a mystery-thriller with a taste of drama to keep you wanting more in each episode.
Netflix is a great place to start for getting into K-Dramas. The variety is limitless, each series having its own unique spin on the standard dramas we have in the U.S. It is a nice break from all the cop and hospital dramas Western society seems oh so obsessed with. If you don’t like any of these, keep looking. There is one out there for everyone!
